Staten Island, NY - The Wagner women's soccer team earned a hard-fought victory to open Northeast Conference (NEC) play against Stonehill, winning 2-0 off of two late goals from junior Izzy Gomez and senior Olivia Rubbo on Sunday afternoon at Hameline Field.
Prior to the game, the Seahawks honored its eight seniors.
The Green & White controlled the offensive side of the ball, outshooting the Skyhawks, 17-5. Despite the influx of shots and lack of results, the offense was brewing to break through eventually. That came in the 82nd minute courtesy of Gomez.
A midfield outlet pass from senior Claire Janis fell perfectly in place for the UConn transfer. One touch later and Gomez ripped a right-footed shot past the outstretched arms of Stonehill's keeper, putting the Seahawks ahead.
A mere five minutes later in the 87th minute, Rubbo put the game out of reach for her first goal of the season. Gomez and sophomore Alana Goldsmith assisted on the goal with a sequence of beautifully placed passes, leading to a breakaway for Rubbo.
On the day, freshman Anna Shepard paced the Seahawks with four shots, while fellow freshman Alana Arjona and Rubbo pieced together three shots a piece.
The Seahawks are one of five unbeaten teams in conference play early in the slate and they will look to move to 2-0 on Thursday, September 26 against Delaware State at 7:00 pm.
