Trenton, NJ - The Wagner baseball team pulled off the weekend sweep of Le Moyne in Sunday's 8-0 victory. The pitching staff combined to allow just two hits as the Seahawks moved into a three-way tie for first place in the Northeast Conference (NEC) standings.
Sophomore Ryan Bilka drew the start and earned his first victory of the season by allowing just one hit and two walks across six innings of work. He struck out seven batters on the day.
Senior Julian Taudin-Chabot, junior Andrew Stanley and freshman Keith Davis combined for the final three innings and allowed just one hit combined.
The shutout was the first of the season for the Seahawks as they outscored the Dolphins, 27-8, over the weekend. The Green & White finished their six-game stint at Trenton Thunder Ballpark with a 5-1 record.
Offensively, Wagner got started early with three consecutive two-run innings.Â
Freshman Diego Tavarez supplied both runs in the first on one swing with a double to right field. Senior Lukas Torres then singled in two runs in the second. A throwing error from Le Moyne and a bases-loaded double play resulted in two runs in the third crossing home plate.
In the sixth, junior Mateo Matthews padded the lead with an RBI double. Then, in the seventh, graduate student Henry Martinez perfectly placed a bunt to score senior Chris Conniff for the game's final run.
With the win, the Seahawks now sit in a three-way tie for first place in the NEC standings with Sacred Heart and LIU.Â
Before a three-game series at UMES begins on Friday, the Seahawks will travel to Princeton, NJ, to take on Princeton on Wednesday at 3:00 pm.
