Staten Island, NY - The Wagner baseball team split its Friday doubleheader against Merrimack at SIUH Community Park. Game one went to the Seahawks, 5-4, while the Warriors handed the Seahawks their first home loss of the season in game two, 8-3.
Junior Frankie Wright held the Warriors hitless through five innings of the first game, helping the Green & White create some distance early on. Wright finished his six innings of work allowing just two runs off of three hits while striking out six.
The offense followed suit as junior Mateo Matthews homered twice in the win. Both solo shots to right field occurred in consecutive innings in the fourth and fifth.Â
Wagner's 4-0 lead trickled down to 4-2 in the sixth and 5-4 in the ninth, but graduate student Alec Burnett secured his third save of the season to earn the series opening victory for the Seahawks.
In game two, the teams flipped positioning as Merrimack's offense generated 15 hits.
An RBI groundout from Matthews gave the Seahawks a 1-0 lead in the third. However, three runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth set the Warriors up for the series tying win.
Junior Matthew Kenney singled in senior Lukas Torres to make it 5-3 in the sixth, but that was as close the Green & White would get to closing the gap the rest of the way.
Torres collected a pair of hits in each matchup.
The rubber match is scheduled for Saturday at noon, with the Seahawks looking to stay atop the Northeast Conference (NEC) leaderboard.
