Swimming & Diving Completes Weekend Sweep Of LIU

Brooklyn, NY - The Wagner swimming & diving program finished its weekend sweep of LIU, picking up an additional two wins to clinch a four-win weekend. The women emerged victorious, 94-73, while the men won, 122-56.

The Seahawks tallied an impressive 18 individual victories, with six swimmers posting two on the day.

Sophomore Aura Vilarrasa continued her strong weekend with two individual victories. After winning twice on Friday versus LIU, Vilarrasa took home first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.33) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.63) on Saturday.

Freshmen Rebekka Luoto and Jasu Ovaskainen picked up two wins too, with Luoto taking first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.02) and 200-yard IM (2:07.78), and Ovaskainen winning in the 100-yard butterfly (48.35) and 200-yard IM (1:51.41) along with Luoto.

Freshman Manuel Chavez Villalpando secured the first two individual victories of his collegiate career in the 200-yard butterfly (1:52.50) and 500-yard freestyle (4:58.55).

Rounding out the multi-time winners at LIU were junior Shamiya Guirre and sophomore Kaan Nalçaci. Guirre won the 100-yard backstroke (59.45) and the 100-yard butterfly (59.18), while Nalçaci snatched first in the 100-yard (50.10) and 200-yard backstroke (1:53.23).

After celebrating their final home meet the day prior, both fifth year Olivia Bishop and senior Abbie Hassell took home the top spots in their respective events. Bishop won the 100-yard freestyle (52.64), while Hassell won the 50-yard freestyle (25.30).

Sophomores Ruben Van Gool (1000-yard freestyle; 9:31.42), Lia Vendel (200-yard breaststroke; 2:24.63) and Ranger Gavino (200-yard breaststroke; 2:06.14) secured individual victories, while freshman Rachael Harris won her first event of her career at the meet as well.

The Green & White will travel to Fordham on Wednesday, February 7, to wrap up the regular season. The team will then head to Geneva, OH, for the NEC Championships in late February.
