Chapel Hill, NC - The Wagner baseball team concluded its weekend series against #15 North Carolina with a 20-6 loss on Sunday afternoon at Bryson Field at Boshamer Stadium.
Graduate student David Melfi and senior Lukas Torres garnered multiple hits on the day.
After the prior two games saw the Seahawks remain competitive with the nationally ranked Tar Heels through five innings, Sunday's tilt was North Carolina's from the jump. A ten-run second inning put the Green & White in a hole — one they aimed to climb out of in the next half inning.
Four runs crossed the plate for Wagner in the top of the third inning, with Torres, Melfi and junior Mateo Matthews generating runs across three consecutive at-bats.Â
The 10-4 score at the conclusion of the top half of the third was the closest the Seahawks were to challenging North Carolina. The Tar Heels scored in four innings thereafter to distance themselves from the visitors.Â
Overall, the Seahawks scored 14 times on 20 hits over the weekend. They will look to get back on track when they travel to College Station, TX, to take on #8 Texas A&M on Friday, February 23 at 6:00 pm.
