Softball Sweeps Season Opener At Norfolk State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Norfolk, VA - The Wagner College softball team opened its season with a double header against Norfolk State Friday, February 16. In game one, the Seahawks earned a 6-2 win over the Spartans before earning an extra-inning victory with a score of 6-3. 

Game 1 Recap: Wagner 6-2 Norfolk State

The Seahawks took an early lead in the top of the first inning as senior Samantha Tran singled down the right field line before sophomore Payton Janicki followed with another right field single. Tran and Janicki would both steal home making it a 2-0 ball game going into the second. 

In the fourth, freshman Sydnie Trujillo singles before Tran earned her second base hit of the day. Freshman Brityn Buchanan singled to center field, scoring Trujillo before Janicki brought Tran and Buchanan home with a double to center field making it a 5-2 game. 

In the seventh inning, Janicki secured her third hit of the day with another double up the middle before freshman Lea Rachal singles to center field to bring Janicki home extending the Seahawks lead to 6-2. 

In the circle, sophomore Natalie Rodriguez earns her first victory facing 19 batters in four innings, dishing out six fly-outs and five ground balls. Freshman Karson Zavala wrapped up the game facing 12 batters with no runs scored. 

Game 2 Recap: Wagner 6-3 Norfolk State

In the top of the first inning freshman, Leilani Gonzales earned her first hit as a Seahawk with a single but would be stranded on base. 

The Seahawks wouldn't score until the top of the next inning when Gonzales drove junior Kate Wolf home with a single through the right side before Tran singled to shortstop driving home Gonzales. 

In the bottom of the third the Spartans came back to match our three run lead. 

In the first extra-inning game of the season, the Seahawks prevailed as junior Justine Caranza walked before stealing second and home to put the Seahawks on top with a score of 4-3. Rachal kept the rally alive by smashing a single through the right side before Janicki hit a sacrifice ground ball to second base, scoring Rachal. Freshman Sydney Chargualaf earned her first career hit with a single up the middle scoring Wolf making the score 6-3. 

The Seahawks held the Spartans to three runs in the bottom of the 8th for a final score of 6-3.
In the circle, sophomore Emma Crosby started the game completing 2.1 innings and facing 15 batters with 3 earned runs. Freshman Abby Moran entered the circle in the bottom of the third striking out two batters to end the inning. Moran gave up no runs the rest of the game leading the Seahawks to victory. 

The Seahawks will be back in action tomorrow to take on Hampton and Coppin state at 10 AM and 12:30 PM.
