Swimming And Diving Programs Open 2024-25 Season At Iona

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College men's and swimming and diving teams will open the 2024-25 season at Iona on Saturday.

In addition to the Gaels, the women's team will also take on Sacred Heart.

On the men's side, the defending Northeast Conference (NEC) champions were picked to defend their title in the annual preseason coaches poll. Wagner returns junior Ruben Van Gool, who was a catalyst in the team's final push to a championship in February. He won the 500-yard freestyle and 1650-yard freestyle at the event, continuing his season-long dominance in distance races.

Howard and Wagner tied for first place in the preseason poll, with LIU and Le Moyne following.

On the women's side, the Seahawks were picked third in the NEC Preseason Poll.

After being picked second in the preseason poll the two previous seasons, the Seahawks remained in the top-three behind defending champions CCSU, who were the unanimous number one, and Howard.

Wagner returns sophomore Rebekka Luoto, who won six NEC Rookie of the Week awards and two swimmer of the week nods in the 2023-24 season.

A second tri-meet follows on November 1, with the Green & White traveling to Connecticut to face-off against Southern Connecticut State and CCSU.

The final tri-meet of the season will take place on Long Island, with the Seahawks heading to Brooklyn to take on LIU for the first of three times in 2024-25. Manhattan will join Wagner and LIU at the meet on November 9.

Wagner will conclude the first half of its season in Kingston, RI, at the Harold Anderson Invite. The three-day event will span from November 21-24. Last season, both teams finished in the top-three of their respective competitions, with the men snatching second place and the women taking home third.

The Seahawks return to action on January 18 when they host Binghamton. After traveling to Seton Hall on January 24, the Green & White will host LIU on January 31 as a part of a home-away series against the Sharks.

The third and final matchup against LIU will occur on February 1.

Wagner will conclude its season at the NEC Championship from February 17-23 at the Spire Institute in Geneva, OH. The men's team will be looking to defend its crown after emerging victorious at the 2024 NEC Championship.
