Staten Island, NY - Wagner women's soccer coach Phil Casella has announced the team's captains for the upcoming 2023 season. Senior Kayla Barbosa and graduate student Juliana Rafaniello have been given the leadership responsibility.
"I am super excited about Juliana and Kayla leading this program this fall season," Casella said. "They exhibit what a Wagner soccer student-athlete is all about. They are honest, hardworking individuals and great teammates. They perform both on the field and in the classroom and are two great representatives of what Wagner soccer is all about."
Barbosa is in her fourth year with the program and has been a staple on the defensive side of the ball since debuting during her sophomore year. Last season she helped anchor two shutouts to add onto the five she helped orchestrate in 2021.Â
Rafaniello takes over as captain in just her second season with the Seahawks. After transferring from UMBC, the Old Bridge, NJ, native has been a catalyst on offense. She tied for the team-high in shots (33) in 2022 and led the team with 18 shots on goal.
The Green & White will open the season in Lawrenceville, NJ, against Rider on Thursday, August 17 at 7:00 pm.
