EASTON, Mass. — The Wagner women's soccer team earned its third Northeast Conference win of the season on Sunday afternoon, defeating Stonehill 4-3 at W.B. Mason Stadium.
Wagner attacked early, scoring four goals in the first half to seize control before holding off a late Stonehill push. With the victory, the Seahawks improved to 4-2-5 overall and 3-1-1 in NEC play.
After the Skyhawks opened the scoring in the fifth minute, the Seahawks answered when senior captain
Izzy Gomez netted the equalizer in the twenty-sixth minute off an assist from junior
Alana Goldsmith. Less than a minute later, Goldsmith added a goal of her own to give Wagner the lead.
The scoring run continued in the thirtieth minute, when freshman
Ashley Smith converted a pass from sophomore
Hailey Knapp to extend the advantage to 3-1. Gomez then struck again in the thirty-sixth minute with her second goal of the match, sending Wagner into halftime with a 4-1 lead.
Stonehill battled back with two goals in the second half, but the Seahawks' defense and sophomore goalkeeper
Abigail Marcello held firm. Marcello finished with six saves to secure the win.
Despite being outshot 22-11, Wagner took advantage of its chances, recording five shots on target to Stonehill's nine. Both sides finished with three corner kicks, while possession time ending in favor of the Skyhawks.
The Seahawks will look to continue their NEC success when they return home to host Saint Francis U on Sunday, October 12 at Hameline Field, which will also be senior day to celebrate the team's upcoming graduates.
