Staten Island, NY - The Wagner women's soccer team fell to Manhattan on Sunday afternoon by a score of 2-1.
The Jaspers held the early advantage in a physical contest, scoring in the 9th minute off of a corner kick header. They then added an insurance goal in the 58th minute off of the right boot of Arancha Antunes.
Wagner wouldn't go away, however, as graduate student Madison Carr scored on a free kick in the 88th minute. The Seahawks made a run at tying the match, but it was too little too late as the team fell to 1-3 on the season.
The chances were there as the Green & White compiled 13 shots — nine of which on goal — to Manhattan's nine. Junior Claire Janis supplied four of those shots, while freshman Jess Maraia and graduate student Juliana Rafaniello recorded a pair of shots on the day.
Fouls caught up to the Seahawks as they committed 18 infractions. Those interruptions in play helped Manhattan maintain momentum at times, contributing to the 2-1 result.
Wagner will hit the road for its next contest on Thursday, August 31 against Iona. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 pm in New Rochelle, NY.
