New Rochelle, NY - The Wagner women's soccer team collected its second win of the season on Thursday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over Iona at Mazzella Field.
Graduate student Madison Carr scored the lone goal of the contest in the 52nd minute to earn the Seahawks the win. Freshman Jess Maraia assisted on the goal, marking the first assist of the season for the team.
It was quite a day offensively for Carr as the veteran forward forced up all five shots for Wagner. Three of the Perrvyille, MD native's shots were on goal.
The first half was scoreless, with two of Carr's shots being the only action by either side. The Seahawks finally broke through in the second half as junior goalkeeper Sam Hughes clinched her second clean sheet of the season.
In two wins this season, Hughes's defense has been crucial for the Seahawks. Against the Gaels, the Pottstown, PA native turned away nine shots, notching one save on the day.
Aiding Hughes in the clean sheet were senior Kayla Barbosa and freshman Sydney Saponaro, who both logged 90 minutes on defense in the win.
The Seahawks move to 2-3 on the season and will look ahead to their next match on Sunday, September 3 against Binghamton at Hameline Field.
