Staten Island, NY - Senior defender Kayla Barbosa of the Wagner women's soccer team scored the lone goal of the team's home opener against Army on Thursday evening. Barbosa's second career goal was the first of the season for the Seahawks, resulting in a 1-0 victory over the Black Knights.
In the 62nd minute, Barbosa lined up for Wagner's second consecutive corner kick. The left-footed defender perfectly placed the ball past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Sage Strohman and into the inside portion of the left post to score the eventual game-winner.
The result secured Wagner's first win of the season and first win all-time versus Army.
Junior Sam Hughes withstood the intense back-and-forth affair, collecting five saves. Joining her in salvaging the clean sheet was Barbosa and freshman Hannah Costa, who played all 90 minutes in her first career start.
Overall, six Seahawks played the full 90 minutes, including freshman Caroline Kessler, who drew her third consecutive start to kick off her collegiate career. Fellow freshman Sara Wiedeman also shined across 54 minutes with a team-high two shots on the night.
Wagner will look to make it two in a row when it hosts Manhattan on Sunday, August 27 at 1:00 pm.
