Wappingers Falls, NY - The #2 seed Wagner baseball team suffered a 13-2 loss to #1 seed Central Connecticut State in the championship round of the 2023 Northeast Conference (NEC) Baseball Tournament on Saturday.
Both teams now each have one loss in the tournament and will meet again tomorrow to determine who will be crowned NEC Champions.Â
For the third time in three games at the tournament, senior Griffin Selby drove in Wagner's opening run. After senior David Melfi advanced to third on a throwing error by Jeff Nicol, Selby roped a single to right to bring home the first run of the game.
The quick start by the Seahawks was erased as CCSU put up two runs in the first. The Blue Devils never trailed from then on as they scored in every inning to put a dent in Wagner's momentum. The game ended via mercy rule in the seventh inning.
Senior Cody Bey supplied the only other run for the Green & White with a single in the fourth.
The Seahawks cycled through four pitchers in today's loss.
Wagner will have another chance to capture its first NEC Tournament trophy since 2000 when the two teams square off at noon on Sunday.Â
