Staten Island, NY - The Wagner baseball team suffered a 3-2 loss to LIU on Thursday.
It was a tough loss for the Seahawks as they held a 2-1 lead heading into the eighth inning. Senior Dante Faicchio provided both RBIs — a single in the fourth and a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
The Sharks loaded the bases in the eighth and capitalized on a throwing error by senior Cody Bey. Two runs crossed home plate off the error, leading to LIU's late-inning victory.
Wagner had a chance in the ninth to tie the game, but a 7-2 double play ended the game.
Sophomore Connor Hayden received the loss, but was tremendous over his 7.1 innings of work. Hayden allowed two runs on three hits while striking out six batters.
Freshman Ryan Bilka continued his scoreless streak with 1.2 shutout innings in relief.
The Seahawks need to win one game against LIU to lock up a top-two seed and first round bye in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament. Their next chance will come during game one of Friday's doubleheader which starts at 3:00 pm.
