Women’s Basketball Picks Up First Win Of The Season With 69-67 Victory Over Navy

Staten Island, NY - Behind clutch defensive stops down the stretch, the Wagner College women's basketball team earned its first win of the season on Thursday evening over Navy at the Spiro Sports Center, 69-67.

Navy didn't score through the final 3:18 of play as the Seahawks buckled down defensively.

Trailing by two with 42 seconds to play, freshman Drew Jordon recorded her second steal of the contest and executed an old-fashioned three-point play on the other end to give Wagner back the lead it relinquished earlier in the period.

A clutch steal by junior Semie Brar and a crucial charge call drawn by sophomore Angélie Ricard continued to set the tone as Wagner's late game dominance led to the program's first win of the young season.

The Seahawks got off to a hot start behind freshman Kiera Edmonds's eight points in the opening four minutes of action. Edmonds scored six straight for the Seahawks, prompting Navy to call an early timeout.

The timeout didn't stymie Wagner's momentum, however, as it jumped out to a 27-12 lead by the end of the period. Edmonds's eight led the way, followed by five points from junior Paige Lyons.

A sluggish start to the second quarter was erased after graduate student Taleah Washington fueled a 10-4 run. Washington caught fire with eight straight points for the Seahawks.

The Seahawks entered the half with a 40-28 lead, but the second half came down to the wire as Navy closed the gap. In the end, Wagner prevailed in a hard fought victory.

All nine players who suited up on the night scored, with Edmonds and Ballinger leading the way with 12 a piece, and Washington and Jordon trailing with 11 points a piece.

Wagner improves to 1-5, whereas Navy drops to 3-4 on the year.

Up next for the Green & White is a road matchup versus Saint Peter's on Wednesday, December 6 at 7:00 pm.
