Swimming & Diving Emerges Victorious At LIU; Men Secure First NEC Victory In Program History

Brooklyn, NY - The Wagner men's and women's swimming & diving teams each picked up victories in their dual meet at LIU on Saturday, with the men's team picking up their first Northeast Conference (NEC) victory in program history.

The men prevailed, 147-115, while the women won, 148-114, over the Sharks.

For the men, sophomore Ruben Van Gool continued to impress in the 1000-yard and 500-yard freestyle events. After winning both competitions at Wagner's previous meet last weekend, Van Gool swept the two distance events on the men's side.

Junior Robert Wagner too had a solid dual meet after picking up his first individual victory with the Seahawks last weekend. The Helena, MT native won both the 100-yard backstroke (53.01) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:54.68) at LIU.

Defending NEC Swimmer of the Week freshman Jasu Ovaskainen picked up an additional two victories versus the Sharks, securing the top spot in the 100-yard freestyle (46.80) and the 100-yard butterfly (50.21).

Rounding out the first place finishers for the men was freshman Nikkolai Carrillo, who placed first in the 200-yard butterfly (1:53.96).

On the women's side, it was fifth year Olivia Bishop who led the way with three victories.

Bishop snatched first in the 50-yard freestyle (24.83), 100-yard freestyle (53.28) and 200-yard freestyle (1:55.29) events. The Seahawks fully occupied the podium in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events, with seniors Allie D'Allegro and Abbie Hassell taking home second and third, respectively, in both events.

Two-time NEC Rookie of the Week freshman Rebekka Luoto picked up two more victories this weekend, taking home the top spot in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.82) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:10.14).

Completing the individual victories for women were sophomores Aura Vilarrasa and Lia Vendel. Vilarrasa placed first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.72), while Vendel placed first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:25.73).

Additionally, the Green & White took home first in all four relay events for the second consecutive week.

The Seahawks will finalize their fall schedule at Harold Anderson Invite, hosted by Rhode Island. The three-day competition will span from Friday, November 17 to Sunday, November 19.
