Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College field hockey team earned its first victory of the season with a 3-2 Northeast Conference (NEC) victory over Merrimack.
Wagner jumped on the board first with 34 seconds remaining in the opening quarter. Freshman Matilda Heisel was able to find the back of the net off a pass from senior Shaelyn Kobrynich. In the first quarter, Wagner out shot Merrimack 5-1.
Junior Emma Lofstedt found the back of the net off a penalty stroke 9:19 into the second quarter. Merrimack was able to get on the board four minutes later to cut the Wagner lead to 2-1 entering the second half. Wagner out shot Merrimack 5-3 in the second frame. Wagner was able to hold Merrimack without a penalty corner opportunity for the entire first half.
In the third quarter, Shaelyn Kobrynich found the back of the net for the second consecutive game to give Wagner a 3-1 advantage. Kobrynich's goal came 1:39 into the third. Merrimack went on to cut into the Wagner lead in the third to make the score 3-2 entering the fourth quarter.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the fourth quarter as Wagner was able to hold on for its first victory of the season.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Sunday, October 8 when they travel to Fairfield, CT to take on Sacred Heart.
