University Park, PA - Freshman Flavio Vinci of the Wagner men's fencing team finished second in the men's sabre competition at the Garret Invitational this weekend, marking the highest finish by any Wagner fencer in the program's history at the event.
Vinci entered the round of 16 as the top overall seed in the direct elimination stage of the contest. He ultimately fell to Ohio State's Luca Fioretto.
"I'm so proud of all of the work our entire team put in this weekend," head coach David Sierra said. "Flavio's result is truly a reflection of our entire program and the great promise our young men's team has."
In addition to Vinci, freshman Charlie Dolan also advanced to the knockout stage of the sabre competition as the twelve seed. Junior Atticus Bliss and freshman Ismael Chavez clinched a spot in the épée direct elimination round as well as the Wagner men's fencing program made its mark in its debut.
For the women, three fencers qualified for the knockout stage, another program-best at the Garret Invitational. Junior Katerina Cervenkova entered the épée direct elimination tournament as the seven seed, while freshmen Morrigan Adams and Renata Ziganova made the sabre and foil knockout stages, respectively.
Both freshmen bowed out in the first round, while Cervenkova advanced to the quarter finals before being eliminated by Yeva Mazur of Ohio State.
The Drew Invitational, scheduled for Sunday, November 5, is up next for the Seahawks.
