Baseball Drops Season Finale At Bryant On Saturday Afternoon

Smithfield, RI - The Wagner baseball team answered an early score by Bryant with five runs in the top of the second, but the Bulldogs sparked an eight-run bottom of the second and tacked on three more runs in their half of the third as the Seahawks dropped the regular-season finale, 13-5, on Saturday afternoon. 
 
Wagner finishes the season at 17-34 and 12-15 in Northeast Conference (NEC) action while the Bulldogs finish at 27-25; 17-10 in league contests. 
 
Maimu Kobayashi, Cody Bey, and Quinn Mimnaugh each had two hits for the Green & White on the afternoon with Kobayashi driving in two of Wagner's five RBIs this afternoon. Mike Ruggiero, Mimnaugh, and David Melfi also added an RBI on the day. 
 
Daniel Merkel was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs (three earned) on four hits over 1.1 innings of work. Connor Hayden relieved Merkel and also surrendered six runs (three earned) while walking one and striking out three batters. 
 
Eric Crouse tossed three innings in relief of Hayden, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out two. Ruben Del Castillo and Nick DeCarlo worked a combined two scoreless innings without giving up a hit. 
 
Jake Gustin powered the Bulldogs' offense, collecting three hits while he and Shane Kelly each drove in four RBIs for Bryant. Matt Woods and Logan Allen added two hits apiece while driving in two RBIs as well. 
 
Bryant starter Logan Fraiser allowed five runs on five hits in his two innings of work. The Bulldogs used five relievers who didn't allow a run in their appearance as Kyle Rizy picked up the win, tossing three innings while striking out two and giving up three hits. 
 
The Bulldogs struck for the game's first run as Gustin connected on a solo home run to right. 
 
The Seahawks quickly responded in the top of the second, sparking a five-run inning in taking their only lead of the contest. Bey sent a one-out single through the left side before Brandon Glowacki was hit by a pitch. 
 
Mimnaugh brought in the tying run as he singled up the middle that plated home Bey.
 

The next batter, Melfi, followed suit, singling through the left side that brought home Glowacki as Wagner went up 2-1. 

 

With two outs in the frame, Kobayashi doubled down the left-field line, clearing the bases as Melfi and Mimnaugh scored as the Seahawks went ahead 4-1.
 

Ruggiero added a hard-hit single down the third-base line that scored Kobayashi making it 5-1, but he was thrown out at second trying to stretch it into a double. 

 

Bryant responded with eight runs in their half of the second taking a 9-5 lead. Kelly was hit by a pitch while Matt Smith walked, giving the Bulldogs a pair of runners. A sacrifice bunt by Tommy DiTullio advanced both runners into scoring position before Allen sent a two-run single to left-center, as Bryant trimmed the deficit to 5-3. 
 
A failed pickoff attempt by Merkel followed by a walk gave the Bulldogs runners on the corner before Gustin singled through the right side, making it 5-4 and ending Merkel's day. 
 
Hayden was able to strike out Alex Lane for the second out of the inning but hit Carmine Petosa and the next batter, Tuccillo, with the bases loaded as the game was tied at 5-5. 
 
Kelly stepped in and unloaded the bases with a grand slam to left-center field, as the Bulldogs went ahead by four, 9-5. 
 
Bryant tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third in taking a 12-5 advantage as Woods singled home Allen before Gustin connected on his second home run of the day, this one a two-run shot down the right-field line.
 
Wagner tried to rally in their half of the fifth, as Kobayashi led the inning off with a single down the right-field line and moved to second on a grounder by Ruggiero to short. Following a hit by a pitch to Dante Faicchio, Griffin Selby connected on a hard-hit ball but the Bulldogs were able to turn the inning-ending 4-6-3 double play. 
 
In the bottom of the fifth, Bryant added one more score to its total, making it 13-5, as Allen came into score on a triple to left-center off the bat of Woods.
 
The Green & White tried to stage one final rally in the ninth. Ethan Valdez, who came on as a pinch-hitter for Mimnaugh, walked and Shane Harkins, who came on for Melfi, singled to center field, giving the Seahawks a pair of runners with just one out. 
 
Garrett Bugarin grounded into the game-ending 5-4-3 double play as the Seahawks dropped the series to the Bulldogs on the final day of the regular season.
