Seahawks Withstand Late Comeback; Defeats Sacred Heart 8-7 On Saturday Afternoon

Trenton, NJ - The Wagner baseball team trailed 1-0 after the opening inning before sparking a seven-run second inning while withstanding a late Sacred Heart comeback, as the Seahawks held off the Pioneers, 8-7, on Saturday afternoon from Trenton Thunder Ballpark.

Mateo Matthews and Dante Faicchio each led Wagner (7-22; 4-4 NEC) with two RBIs with Matthews producing two hits in the victory. Faicchio, Maimu Kobayashi, Ethan Valdez, and Griffin Selby each added an RBI.

Daniel Merkel earned the start, going four innings before John LaPointe (1-1) came on in relief, earning his first victory of the season after allowing two runs on four hits over three innings of work. Jagger Duquette worked a scoreless eighth, striking out before Eli Shedd (SV, 1) worked a scoreless ninth for his first career save.

George Sutherland led Sacred Heart (4-25; 3-5 NEC) with a game-high three hits while driving in two RBIs. Justin Jordan, Robert Farruggio, Ryan Donnelly, and Dante D'amore also had multi-hit performances, each finishing with two hits. Farruggio, D'amore, and Joe Emerson each added an RBI in the contest.

Ryan LaMay (1-5) took the loss after going 5.1 innings, giving up eight runs (two earned) on eight hits while walking three and striking out three batters. Owen MacDonnell pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, striking out four batters without allowing a hit.

Sacred Heart grabbed the early lead as Sutherland singled to right-center that brought in Donnelly, who sent a two-out double down the right-field line, as the Pioneers took a 1-0 lead. Wagner erupted for seven runs on seven in the bottom of the second in taking a 7-1 lead. Matthews led off the big inning with a double to left field. He would move to third on a well-executed sacrifice bunt by Ruggiero.

With the count 1-1, Selby grounded out to short, which brought in Matthews to tie the game at 1-1. Quinn Mimnaugh singled to left and stole second. Shane Harkins reached on a throwing error by Emerson at short, which allowed Mimnaugh to score the go-ahead run. The next batter, Valdez, singled to right, as Harkins crossed the plate, giving Wagner a two-run lead, 3-1. Following a single by Kobayashi and a walk to Lukas Torres to load the bases, Faicchio ripped a 2-2 single to right and moved to second on the throw, as both Kobayashi and Valdez came around to score, as the Green & White upped the lead to 5-1.

The Seahawks tacked on two more runs as Matthews laced a two-run single to left field, scoring both Faicchio and Torres.

The visitors responded with three runs in the top of the third. Farruggio sent a one-out single down the left-field line. A walk to Donnelly and a single by Sutherland loaded the bases for Emerson, who was hit by a pitch, bringing in Farruggio, which trimmed the lead down to five, 7-2. A wild pitch brought in Donnelly before Sutherland scored on a passed ball, making it 7-4. Sacred Heart continued their climb back in the contest, as Sutherland ripped an RBI single to left that scored Farruggio, as Wagner was ahead 7-5.

The score remained that way until the top of the sixth when the Pioneers closed the gap to a one-run game, 7-6, as Farruggio lofted a sacrifice fly to centerfield, bringing in Jordan. Wagner added an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning. Harkins led off the frame with a double to left-center before advancing to third on the sacrifice bunt by Valdez. MacDonnell came on for LaMay, who finished with 100 pitches. The first batter MacDonnell saw, Kobayashi, flew out to deep right, as Harkins tagged from third to extend the lead.

The Pioneers had one more comeback push left, as in the top of the seventh, they once again made a one-run deficit, 8-7. Emerson singled to center before moving to second on the sacrifice bunt. On the first pitch of the at-bat from LaPointe, D'Amore sent a double to right field that plated home Emerson. LaPointe was able to get back-to-back flyouts to end the scoring threat.

Duquette replaced LaPointe in the eighth, only surrendering the lead-off double to Jordan before striking out Sutherland leaving the potential tying run stranded at third. In the ninth, Shedd got Emerson needed just five pitches to earn his first save, as he was able to field a comebacker and flip to first for the final out.

The Seahawks will for their third straight win in the series finale on Sunday afternoon. First-pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. and will be an audio-only telecast on NEC Front Row.
