Baseball Completes Three-Game Sweep Of Sacred Heart On Sunday Afternoon

Trenton, NJ - The Wagner baseball team completed the three-game sweep of Sacred Heart, defeating the Pioneers, 6-3, on Sunday afternoon from Trenton Thunder Ballpark.

Wagner (8-22; 5-4 NEC) earned their first sweep of a Northeast Conference (NEC) opponent since 2019 when the Seahawks took the final three games from FDU.

The weekend series sweep of Sacred marks the first time since 2018 that Wagner has done so, as, the team took all six meetings that season.

Quinn Mimnaugh led the way for the Seahawks at the plate, going 3 for 3 with two doubles and scoring two runs. DiMaggio Cazares added two hits and drove in two RBIs in the victory. Griffin Selby, Dante Faicchio, and Mateo Matthews also added RBIs for the home team.

Starter Connor Hayden went 3.1 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits while walking three and striking out two and not factoring in the decision. Eric Crouse (1-2) turned in a masterful outing in relief of Hayden, earning his first career win after tossing 4.2 scoreless innings, giving up three hits, walking one, and recording a career-high seven strikeouts. Nick LePre (Sv, 1) earned his first save of the season.

Ryan Donnelly paced Sacred Heart (4-26; 3-6 NEC) with three hits in four at-bats. The Pioneers also got hits from Robert Farruggio, Steven Schoen, and Tyler Galletti as the first four Pioneers went a combined 6 for 15. Pinch-hitter Mark Smith and George Sutherland drove in the two RBIs for the visitors on the afternoon.

The Pioneers got on the board first. Farruggio reached on a one-out double to left before moving to third on a fielding error by Hayden. He would come into score on the sacrifice fly to left field off the bat of Sutherland, as Sacred Heart grabbed the early lead.

Wagner wasted little time in responding to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. Kobayashi was hit with a pitch to lead off the game for the Green & White. Mike Ruggiero moved him to second on a single to left. With one out, Matthews lofted an 0-1 pitch to right field as Kobayashi tagged up and scored knotting the game at 1-1.

Following a scoreless second, Wagner plated home the go-ahead score in the bottom of the third. Kobayashi was the catalyst again, drawing an eight-pitch walk before swiping second. Ruggiero swung through the pitch, but Galletti couldn't hold on to the ball as it trickled to the backstop, allowing the fifth-year Seahawk shortstop to reach. Down in the count 1-2, Faicchio flew out to deep center as Kobayashi, similar to the first inning, tagged and scored on the play, giving Wagner their first lead of the ballgame.

It was Sacred Heart's turn to respond and did so at the top of the fourth. Joe Emerson walked and moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt by Hayden. A walk followed to Dante D'amore gave the visitors two runners on with no outs. Schoen moved the runners over on a sacrifice bunt that was field by Hayden, who fired a strike to Ethan Valdez covering at first for the first out of the frame. A wild pitch brought in Emerson as the game was tied at 2-2.

Galletti walked and moved to second on a wild pitch before Justin Levito reached on a hit by pitch, which concluded Hayden's afternoon. Crouse came on and struck out Justin Jordan before Farruggio lined out to Mimnaugh, stranding the bases loaded.

The Seahawks regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Selby, facing an 0-2 count, connected on his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to left as Wagner went up 3-2. Wagner added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring twice on two hits. Selby reached on a hit by pitch. With one out, Mimnaugh doubled down the left-field line, as Wagner had runners on second and third.

Cazares stepped in and ripped an RBI single to left field, scoring Selby and ending Babuschak's afternoon. Michael Attonito came on and tried to pick off Cazares, but his throw sailed past the first baseman, which allowed Cazares to move to second and score Mimnaugh, as Wagner went up 5-2.

The Green & White increased their lead by four, 6-2, as Cazares drove in his second RBI of the contest, reaching on an infield single to first, that fell between the first baseman and second baseman, as Mimnaugh hustled around third to score.

LePre came in the ninth. Jordan reached on an error by Valdez before moving to second on a wild pitch. Jordan moved to third as Ruggiero fielded the ball and threw it to Mimnaugh, but Jordan slid in under the tag as Sacred Heart now had runners on the corners with no outs.

Smith came on as a pinch-hitter and grounded out to Ruggiero at short, as Jordan scored. LePre regained his composure on the mound, getting Sutherland to ground out to Valdez before Emerson lined out to Henry Martinez, who came on as a defensive replacement, in center for the final out, completing the three-game sweep.

Wagner hits the road this week as the Seahawks will head to Brookville, NY to tangle with the LIU Sharks. The series begins on Thursday, April 14, and runs through April 16.
