Baseball Drops Series Finale At Mount St. Mary's, 3-1, On Sunday

Emmitsburg, MD - The Wagner baseball team held a 1-0 lead after two innings before the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers scored twice in the bottom of the third and added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth in taking the weekend series, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon.

Mateo Matthews led Wagner (4-21; 2-4 NEC) with two hits. Maimu Kobayashi and Lukas Torres also had a hit for the Seahawks. Quinn Mimnaugh drove in the lone run for the visitors on the afternoon.

Connor Hayden (0-4) went 3.2 innings in taking the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits while walking four and striking out two batters. The duo of Eric Crouse and John LaPointe combined to throw 4.1 scoreless innings, in which they allowed just two hits, walked two, and struck out five batters.

Tyler Grodell led the way for the Mountaineers (6-16; 2-4 NEC) going 2 for 4 with an RBI. Tristan McAlister drove in another run for the home team while going 1 for 4. Ryan Fisher, Danny Salisbury, and Efrain Correa, Jr. all finished with a hit on the day.

Wagner got on the board in the top of the second as Griffin Selby led off the frame with a walk. Matthews recorded his first hit of the day, sending a single down the right-field line that gave the Seahawks' runners on the corners with no outs.

Mimnaugh lofted a sacrifice fly to right field as Selby tagged up on the play, as the Green & White jumped out to an early 1-0.

The Mountaineers score the tying and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the third taking a 2-1 lead. Correa led off the Mount's third with a single back up the middle. A walk to Matt McTighe put two runners on.

McAlister reached on a fielder's choice bunt but Matthews was able to field it and delivered a strike to Mimnaugh for the first out of the frame. Thomas Bramley was intentionally walked to set up the force out.

The next batter, Grodell, singled to short and advanced to second on the throw as McTighe scored and McAlister was able to cross the plate as Mike Ruggiero's throw sailed over the head of Matthews as Mount went ahead by one, 2-1.

Mount added one more in the bottom of the fourth to make it 3-1. Salisbury and Correa each drew walks before McAlister sent an RBI single to short which ended Hayden's afternoon.

Crouse was able to strike out Tyler Long to halt the potential big inning.

Wagner had a chance in the eighth. Torres and Dante Faicchio each walked and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch from Isaac Van Meter. Blake Beal came on and got Selby to pop out to second to end the inning.

The Seahawks will have a pair of midweek games, beginning on Tuesday afternoon, as Wagner will host Saint Peter's on Tuesday, April 5 in Trenton, NJ at Trenton Thunder Ballpark.

The Green & White will resume the homestand against Hofstra on Wednesday, April 6 in Lakewood, NJ before returning to Trenton for a three-game conference set against Sacred Heart on April 8-10.
