Seahawks Score Nine Times In Seventh Inning To Claim 17-6 Win Over Saint Peter's

Trenton, NJ - The Wagner baseball team trailed at three separate points of Tuesday's home midweek contest against Saint Peter's before scoring three times in the sixth and erupting for nine runs in the seventh in posting a 17-6 win at Trenton Thunder Ballpark.

Xavier Baker and Shane Harkins each had three hits on the day. They, along with Maimu Kobayashi, Dante Faicchio, and Mike Ruggiero added two RBIs apiece. Harkins and Kobayashi led the way for Wagner (5-21) with three runs scored.

Jake Toporek (1-1) earned his first win of the season, throwing a scoreless inning of relief while striking out two batters. Ruben Del Castillo earned the start, going two innings in which he allowed four runs on two hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

Zach Gorman came on to throw four frames, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out two. Nick LePre pitched a scoreless two innings, giving up one hit and striking out three.

Collin Jensen paced Saint Peter's (4-21) with two hits while Michael Cardone and Jeff Massicotte each drove in two RBIs for the visitors on the afternoon. Nick Font went five innings, giving up five runs (four earned) while striking out three but didn't factor into the decision.

Jack Gannon was tagged with the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning.

The Peacocks scored the game's first runs, plating across two in taking the early lead. Following a pair of walks, Jensen laced a single to left field before Massicotte pelted a towering fly ball to Kobayashi in center as Chris Marquart was able to tag up and score.

Wagner got one back in the bottom of the frame. Kobayashi walked and moved to second on a balk. With one out, Faicchio sent a grounder to second in which Kobayashi was able to cross the plate.

The Seahawks tied the game in the next inning, as Baker sent a two-out single to left, plating home Mateo Matthews from third to knot the game at 2-2.

Saint Peter's doubled up the Seahawks in the third, going ahead 4-2. Jensen led off the inning with a double to left-center before Sam Haney was hit by an errant pitch from Del Castillo. A walk to Jack Eichler loaded the bases and ended Del Castillo's day.

Gorman came on and got Massicotte to ground out to second, but Jensen was able to cross the plate. A second straight grounder plated the second run of the inning for Saint Peter's.

Wagner took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs in taking a 5-4 lead. Harkins delivered his first career hit, a double to left field before Baker singled through the left side, giving the Seahawks runners on the corner.

On the first pitch of the at-bat, Kobayashi doubled and advanced to third on a fielding error by the SPU left fielder, which allowed Harkins and Baker to both score. The next batter, Lukas Torres, ripped a single to left to plate home Kobayashi for the first lead of the ballgame for Wagner.

The Peacocks wasted little time in regaining the lead, as in the top of the fifth, Cardone delivered a two-run single as Saint Peter's went ahead by one, 6-5.

It would be the final runs that the visitors would score as the Green & White scored thrice, in taking an 8-6 lead. Harkins kicked started the inning with a hard-hit single that ricocheted off the second base bag. He would move to third on a wild pitch before Kobayashi added his second RBI of the game.

Two straight hits from Torres and Faicchio closed the book on Jack Gannon as Robert Black III came on. A walk to DiMaggio Cazares followed by a second free pass to Mike Ruggiero gave Wagner the lead back, 7-6. A wild pitch brought in Faicchio to make it 8-6.

Wagner erupted for nine runs on three hits in the bottom of the seventh in taking a 17-6 lead. Christian Coombes was able to get the first two Wagner hitters in the inning before walking Baker, who subsequently stole second and third. A walk to Kobayashi and a hit by pitch of Torres ended Coombes day as Tyler Smith came on.

Smith walked Faicchio who plated home Wagner's ninth run of the game. A 1-1 pitch hit Cazares to make it 10-6 before three straight walks doubled up the lead, 12-6, as Michael Bonaccorso came on.

Harkins was the first batter to greet him, sending a two-run single to the left before Baker added an RBI single. Ethan Valdez, who came on as a pinch-hitter, singled to left to bring in Harkins as Wagner went up by 11.

LePre struck out two men in the eight before striking out a pinch-hitter in the ninth and getting the final batter, Joel Moore, to foul out to first.

Due to a change in the schedule, Wagner will head to Hempstead, NY tomorrow afternoon to square off against Hofstra.

First-pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. from University Field.
