Baseball Blanked By Seton Hall On Wednesday Afternoon

Trenton, NJ - The Wagner baseball team (9-25) was shut out in the opening game of its five-game homestand, falling to Big East members, Seton Hall (10-26), 6-0, on Wednesday afternoon.

Wagner was limited to four hits on the afternoon as Dante Faicchio, Griffin Selby, Lukas Torres, and Cody Bey each picked up hits for the Green & White.

Nick DeCarlo (0-2) made his second start of the season, going two innings, in giving up two runs on two hits with two walks and a strikeout. Zach Gorman threw 2.2 innings in relief of DeCarlo. Michael Cunningham tossed 2.1 scoreless innings out of the pen for Gorman. John LaPointe worked an inning while striking out three batters despite allowing two runs.

Nick LePre worked a scoreless ninth as the Staten Island made his 59th career appearance, moving into a tie with Mike D'Agnelis for 12th on the all-time career appearance list.

Will Gale led the Pirates at the plate with two hits while Jedier Hernandez and David Haberman each had two RBIs. Mark McNelly and Devin Hack added an RBI apiece in the win. Aaron Groller picked up the win, throwing three scoreless innings while allowing two hits.

Seton Hall got on the board in the top of the second as Hernandez ripped a two-run double to left-center, plating both Gale and Alex Clyde. The Seahawks had a chance to answer back in the frame, loading the bases with two outs but Quinn Mimnaugh ground out to third, as the Seton Hall third baseman was able to scoop the ball and touch the bag, ending the potential threat.

The visitors struck again for two more in the top of the fifth building a 4-0 lead. A leadoff walk to Haberman opened the frame before Oscar Murray singled through the right side. McNelly reached on a deep infield single to short that plated home the third run of the frame before Hack rolled one to Selby at first, but allowed Murray to come home. The Pirates upped their lead to six in the eighth. Steve Grober singled to right before Gale reached on a bunt single. After LaPointe was able to strike out the next two batters, Haberman cleared the bases with a double to left-center.

Wagner staged a potential comeback in the bottom of the eighth. Maimu Kobayashi was hit by a pitch before Faicchio sent a one-out single. A walk to Selby loaded the bases but the Seahawks stranded them on base as Christian Finnigan was able to strike out Torres and get Cody Bey to foul out to right. LePre only allowed a single to Hack in the top of the ninth as Wagner had one last chance to get on the scoreboard.

Brandon Chorzelewski came on and got pinch-hitter Henry Martinez for the first out. Shane Harkins drew a pinch-hit walk before Garrett Bugarin also drew a free pass, which concluded Chorzelwski's afternoon. Zane Probst came on and struck out both Mike Ruggiero and Dante Faicchio in preserving the shutout for Seton Hall.

Wagner resumes Northeast Conference (NEC) play this weekend, as the Seahawks welcome the Fairleigh Dickinson University Knights on April 22 through April 24 at Trenton Thunder Ballpark.
