Baseball Squanders Late Lead; Drop Series Opener Against FDU On Friday

Trenton, NJ - The Wagner baseball team overcame a five-run deficit by scoring a total of seven runs over the sixth and seventh innings but the visiting Fairleigh Dickinson University Knights sparked an eight-run ninth inning as the Seahawks dropped the series opener, 14-8, on Friday afternoon.
Wagner - FDU Highlights 

Five Seahawks (9-26; 6-7 NEC) had multi-hit performances on the afternoon, led by Cody Bey, who tallied three hits in four chances. AJ Vigliotti, Dante Faicchio, Griffin Selby and Lukas Torres each has two hits.
 
Vigliotti matched a career-high with three RBIs on the afternoon. Bey Faicchio, Selby, and Quinn Mimnaugh each drove in an RBI for the Seahawks. 
 
Frankie Wright allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits over five innings of work while striking out three and walking but didn't factor into the decision. Ruben Del Castillo and Jagger Duquette combined to throw 2.2 innings of scoreless ball while striking out four, as Duquette finished with three strikeouts. 
 
Jake Toporek (1-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing eight runs (five earned) in just two-thirds of an inning. Michael Cunningham finished the ballgame, throwing two-thirds of a frame with one strikeout. 
 
Five Knights (19-18; 11-2 NEC) produced multi-hit games with George Rosales and Justin Sierra each collecting three hits on the day. Tom Ruscitti powered the FDU offense, driving in five RBIs while scoring thrice. Rosales added three RBIs in the win for the visitors. 
 
Starter Nick Evangelista allowed three runs (two earned) over six innings of work in which he recorded seven strikeouts. 
 
Michael DiMartino allowed four runs in his third of an inning before being lifted for Brendan Medoro, who earned the win, after firing 2.2 frames in which he gave up a run on two hits and struck out two Seahawks. 
 
FDU plated across the game's first two runs in the top of the second. Luke Cantwell led off the inning with a double down the right-field line before coming into score on the one-out single by Ruscitti. A two-out wild pitch from Wright allowed Ruscitti to plate the Knights' second run of the inning. 
 
Wagner got on the board in the bottom of the third. Mimnaugh reached on an overthrow by the FDU shortstop. Mike Ruggiero worked a four-pitch walk before Faichhio singled to left that brought in Mimnaugh, cutting the deficit in half. 
 

FDU was able to tack on four runs in the top of the fifth to up its lead to 6-1. Rosales led off the inning with a single through the left side before stealing second. Hunter D'Amato doubled in Rosales as the visitors went up by two. 
 
Cantwell reached on a fielding error by Selby at first, which moved D'Amato to third. On the first pitch that Ruscitti saw from Wright, he connected on a three-run home run that cleared the left-field wall, as the Knights went ahead 6-1. 
 
Wagner continued to chip away into the FDU lead. Selby made up for the earlier miscue by connecting on his fifth home run of the season to lead off the bottom of the sixth. 
 
 
Two straight hits from Torres and Bey gave the Seahawks a pair of runners. With one out, Vigliotti singled to left, bringing in Torres as the Green & White cut the deficit in half, 6-3. 
 
The Seahawks carried that momentum to the bottom of the seventh, scoring five runs on four hits in taking their first lead of the game, 8-6. DiMartino came in for Evangelista. He retired the first batter he saw before walking Faicchio. 
 
Three straight hits by the Green & White further chipped into FDU's lead, as Bey singled to center that brought in Faichhio, making it 6-4. A wild pitch trickled to the backstop as Selby trouted home, making it 6-5, and ended DiMartino's day. 
 
 
Medoro came on and hit Henry Martinez with a pitch. The batter Vigliotti roped a single to left field that plated home the tying and go-ahead runs, as Wagner led 7-6. Mimnaugh reached on a fielder's choice, as he sent a grounder to second, which allowed Martinez to give Wagner a two-run lead. 
 
 
Wagner held the lead until the top of the ninth. Cantwell led off the Knights' inning with a single to left. Tommy Verga tripled to right-center, bringing in Cantwell, as Wagner held an 8-7 advantage. 
 
Ruscitti reached on a fielding error by Bey at second, as Verga scored to tie the game at 8-8. Brelon Harden put the visitors ahead with a single to left-center, scoring Ruscitti, as FDU claimed a one-run lead, 9-8. 
 
Justin Sierra singled to left-center, giving the visitors a pair of runners on first and second. Sosa sent a single to left that brought in Harden, as FDU went ahead by two, 10-8. 
 
Following a double steal, Rosales connected on the Knights' second three-run home run of the contest, pushing the lead to 13-8 before a second misplay at second plated home FDU's 14th run of the game. 
 
In the bottom of the inning, Bey was able to draw a six-pitch walk but was stranded after stealing second, as Mimnaugh lined out to first ending the ballgame. 
 
Game two of this weekend's three-game series is set for 3:00 p.m.
