Women’s Lacrosse Set To Host NEC Contest Against Sacred Heart On Wednesday Evening

The Wagner women's lacrosse team will play host to Sacred Heart on Wednesday evening at 7:00 P.M. at Hameline Field.

Last Time Out
The Seahawks dropped a Northeast Conference (NEC) contest to Merrimack, 10-7, on Saturday, April 16.

The Seahawks opened the contest on a 3-0 run in the first seven minutes of the contest as three different goal scorers chipped in for Wagner. Sophomore Kelsey Scheidel got the Seahawks on the board 2:18 into the contest before senior Kasey Dorney and graduate student Stefani Peluso tallied goals to extend the Wagner lead. Merrimack cut the Wagner lead to 3-1 after Peluso's goal as Scheidel tallied her second goal of the frame with 1:57 remaining to push the Wagner lead to 4-1 after the opening frame.

Merrimack outscored Wagner 4-0 in the second quarter to claim a 5-4 lead at the halftime intermission, two of the four goals came with under 60 seconds remaining in the half.

The Warriors carried the momentum into the third quarter as they outscored the Seahawks 3-1 as junior Sarah Shaughnessy tallied the lone goal of the third for Wagner.

With an 8-5 lead heading into the final stanza, the Warriors tallied the first two goals of the quarter before Stefani Peluso found the back of the net for the second time in the contest. Junior Emily Wesoky also tallied a goal in the quarter as the 2-0 run cut the deficit to 10-7 before the Warriors walked away with the victory.

Kelsey Scheidel tallied two goals and has scored six goals in the last two contests while Emily Wesoky tallied one goal and dished out one assist. Kasey Dorney scored one goal on eight shots to go along with three ground balls while classmate Aileen Hannan tallied three ground balls, four draw controls, and four caused turnovers. Senior goalkeeper Lauren DiStefano stopped 15 shots to go along with seven ground balls.

Kelsey Scheidel Claims NEC Honors
After a strong week last week with six goals, one assist, seven points, 10 shots, and three ground balls, Kelsey Scheidel was named an NEC Prime Performer on Monday afternoon, the first NEC recognition of her career.
 
The Islip, NY native tallied a career-high four goals against #13 Rutgers on Wednesday, April 13 and followed with two goals against Merrimack this past Saturday. In 11 games played and four starts this season, the sophomore has eight goals with one assist, eight ground balls and 10 draw controls.

NEC Leaders
As a team, the Seahawks lead the NEC in ground balls with 276 and ground balls per game with 19.71. Wagner also leads the conference with 137 caused turnovers, Mount St. Mary's and Merrimack are second with 106. The Seahawks average 9.79 caused turnovers per game, the highest in the NEC.

Aileen Hannan also leads the NEC with 46 ground balls and 3.29 per contest. Lauren DiStefano is third with 43 ground balls and 3.07 per contest while Kasey Dorney checks in sixth in the leaderboard with 38 ground balls and 2.71 per game.

Lauren DiStefano ranks second with 146 saves and a .507 save percentage in 14 games played.

Seahawk Milestones
Stefani Peluso earned her 100th career point in the NEC opener against Central Connecticut State on March 26 behind four goals in the contest. Classmate Madeline Seims tallied her 150th career point as a member of the Green & White against LIU on March 30. For Seims, she moved into sole possession of seventh place in career points and is fourth in career goals with 136.

On the same day, senior goalkeeper Lauren DiStefano notched her 300th career save.

Graduate student Victoria Tucci claimed her 100th career point against Saint Francis U on April 2 while senior Kasey Dorney reached the century mark in points with a goal against #13 Rutgers on Wednesday, April 13.

Historic NEC Run
Wagner has reached the NEC title game in every season since 2014 while claiming a championship in 2016, 2018, and 2019. During the run to seven consecutive title games, the Green & White have finished second in the regular season in 2021, 2019, 2018, 2016, 2015, and 2014. Wagner entered the 2017 NEC tournament as the #3 seed. In 2014, the Seahawks entered the season picked seventh in the preseason poll and claimed second in the regular season and earned a trip to the conference championship game.

Wagner currently sits at 3-2 in conference play and sits in 4th place while Wednesday's opponent, Sacred Heart, sits right behind Wagner at 2-2 in conference play.

About Sacred Heart
The Pioneers come to Hameline Field with a 4-8 overall record and a 2-2 NEC mark. On Saturday, April 16, Sacred Heart fell to LIU, 9-7 to end a two-game winning streak.

Senior Lydia Werlau leads the Sacred Heart attack with 30 goals, 10 assists, and 40 points while also leading the team with 14 caused turnovers.

The Pioneers have had three different goalkeepers start at least one game in between the pipes as freshman Lisa Martin has started seven out of the 12 games.
