Seahawks Fall To Sharks On Friday Afternoon

Brookville, NY - The Wagner baseball team suffered a 6-1 setback on Friday afternoon to the LIU Sharks in the middle game of its three-game Northeast Conference (NEC) series.

Maimu Kobayashi and Quinn Mimnaugh each had multi-hit games for the visitors (8-24; 5-6 NEC), as both Kobayashi and Mimnaugh went 2 for 3 on the day. Torres drove in the lone RBI for the Green & White, finishing 1 for 4 at the plate. Mateo Matthews and Griffin Selby also produced a hit.

For Kobayashi and Dante Faicchio, they extend their reached base streak to 20 straight games while Torres now stands at 15 consecutive games. Mimnaugh continues his torrid approach at the dish, extending his hit streak to five straight.

Daniel Merkel was tagged with the loss, after allowing six runs (four earned) on three hits while walking six and striking out four batters. Jagger Duquette and Brandon Demma combined to throw 3.1 scoreless innings in relief, surrendering a hit and recording four strikeouts.

Giovanni Ciaccio powered the Sharks (23-11; 8-3 NEC) offense, going 2 for 3 with two runs scored and driving in four RBIs in the victory. Christopher Wesson and Bentley Boekhout had a hit apiece with Wasson driving in the other LIU run.

Jalen Wade allowed one run on three hits over five innings of work in recording the win, his third of the season. Nick Desalvo tossed four shutout innings in relief, giving up four hits and striking out ten batters.

LIU plated two in the bottom of the first to claim the early advantage. With two one, Wasson singled to right field bringing in Michael Edleman. Wasson stole second while Ciaccio came into score on the misplayed ball by the Seahawk catcher that made it 2-0.

The Sharks added two more in the bottom of the third to up its lead to 4-0 as Ciaccio clubbed a two-run home run to right field.

Wagner plated their only run of the contest in the top of the fourth. Kobayashi led off the frame with a double down the left-field line. On the first pitch of the at-bat, Torres ripped a screaming single to left that brought in Kobayashi.

The Seahawks threatened in the frame as Dante Faicchio walked but Wade was able to strand both runners on first and second with a pair of strikeouts surrounding a fly out.

LIU added two more in the bottom of the fifth as Ciaccio was again the catalyst, sending a two-run, bases-clearing triple that ended Merkel's afternoon as the Sharks went ahead 6-1.

The visitors threatened in the top of the sixth. Matthews sent a one-out single to left-center before Selby added a two-out single to right. Mimnaugh reached on an infield single to short to load the bases but Desalvo was able to get Vigliotti swinging to halt the scoring attempt.
