Seahawks Spark Six-Run Ninth Inning To Complete Comeback At LIU; Win 10-7 In Series Finale

Vigliotti's go-ahead three-run double in the ninth proved to be the difference

Brookville, NY - Trailing 7-4 heading into the final inning, the Wagner baseball team erupted for six runs in the ninth in completing the comeback and taking the series finale, 10-7, at LIU on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Seahawks move to 9-24 overall and 6-6 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play while LIU's eight-game win streak came to an end, as they fall to 23-12 and 8-4 in league contests.

Cody Bey and Dimaggio Cazares each had three hits on the afternoon. AJ Vigliotti went 1 for 5, with the one proving to be the difference, as he connected on a base clearing double in the ninth, finishing with a career-high three RBIs.

Dante Faicchio and Bey added two RBIs while Griffin Selby and Quinn Mimnaugh each had an RBI in the victory.

Connor Hayden made his fifth start of the season before Eli Shedd came on in relief to throw 5.2 innings of one-hit ball, allowing two runs (one earned). Eric Crouse (2-2) earned the victory after tossing two scoreless innings, giving up one hit, a walk, and striking out four batters.

Seth Surrett, Michael Edelman, and EJ Expositio each went 2 for 5 while combing for five runs scored and four RBIs. Giovanni Ciaccio also added two RBIs while going 1 for 4 on the afternoon.

Ryan Neuweiler went four innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on four hits while walking two and striking out two without factoring into the decision. Josh Gainer was pegged with the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits over 2.1 innings despite walking one and striking out five.

The Seahawks took an early 1-0 lead as Selby flew out to center field as Mike Ruggiero, who reached on a single to left, tagged up on the play for the first run of the ballgame.

LIU wasted little time in tying the contest at 1-1. Surrett led off with a single to center before moving to second. With two outs, Ciaccio singled to left which brought in Surrett.

Wagner regained the lead in the top of the second. Bey doubled to left field to start the frame before moving to third on a flyout by Cazares. Following a two-out walk to Mimnaugh, Maimu Kobayashi reached on a fielding error by the third baseman, allowing Bey to score the go-ahead run.

The Sharks sparked a four-run bottom of the second to take a 5-2 lead. A pair of one-out walks to Bentley Boekhout and Christopher Hund gave Surrett a chance, as he doubled in Boekhout to tie the game at 2-2.

Two straight RBI base hits from Edelman and Exposito made it 4-2, ending Hayden's day. Shedd came on and got Ciaccio to flu out to Kobayashi in center, but Edelman was able to come in to cap the four-run inning.

Wagner got home back in their half of the fourth. Cazares led off with a first-pitch double to center field. Mimnaugh sent a deep fly to center field as Cazares was able to tag from third and come in, trimming the Sharks' lead to two, 5-3.

LIU added a score in the bottom of the fifth to double up Wagner, 6-3, as Connor Price grounded out to Minaugh at third, as Exposito was able to score.

The visitors continued the climb back in the contest, cutting the lead back to two at 6-4 in the sixth as Bey connected on a solo home run to left field, his first of the season.

The home increased their lead back to three, 7-4, as Edleman led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run down the left-field line.

The Green & White waited until the ninth to uncork six runs, taking a 10-7 lead. Mike Ruggiero reached on a fielding error by the Sharks' third baseman. On a 2-2 pitch, Faicchio connected on his team-leading eighth home run of the season, cutting the LIU lead down to one, 7-6.

Selby passed the baton, as he doubled to left-center before Torres was hit by a pitch, giving the Seahawks a pair of runners with one out. On the first pitch he saw, Bey ripped a game-tying double to left field, scoring Selby as Wagner came all the back for the 7-7 tie.

Following an intentional walk to Cazares, Vigliotti cleared the bases on one swing, sending a double to the deepest part of right-center as the Seahawks claimed a three-run lead at 10-7.

Crouse was able to strike out both Surrett and Edleman swinging before giving up a single toe Expositio. Running the count full, Crouse was able to strand Expositio at first as Ciaccio looked at strike three, as Wagner earned the series finale victory.

Wagner kicks off a five-game home stretch, beginning on Wednesday afternoon as the Seahawks will conclude their series with Seton Hall at Trenton Thunder Ballpark. The Seahawks resume NEC play over the weekend, as FDU comes to Trenton April 22-24 before the Green & White closes out the homestand on Tuesday, April 26 in Lakewood at ShoreTown Ballpark, when they host Villanova.
