Baseball Scores Season-High 19 Runs To Defeat Fordham, 19-11, On Wednesday

Seahawks connect on four home runs in the contest

Bronx, NY - The Wagner College baseball team clubbed four home runs en route to posting a season-high 19 runs as the Seahawks defeated the Fordham University Rams, 19-11, on Wednesday afternoon.

Wagner (2-12) snaps a nine-game losing streak in earning their second win of the season.

Three Seahawks had multi-hit performances, led by fifth-year Mike Ruggiero, who went 3 for 4 with four runs scored and had an RBI. Lukas Torres and Dante Faicchio each had two hits apiece.

Faichhio, along with David Melfi, had a team-high three RBIs while Lukas Torres, Mateo Matthews, and Xavier Baker each had two RBIs in the victory.

Ruben Del Castillo (2-1) earned his second victory of the season, after throwing three innings in relief of Nick DeCarlo. Del Castillo allowed just two runs on three hits with one walk and a strikeout.

Sebastian Mexico led the Rams (2-12) with two hits while scoring a team-high three runs for Fordham. Jack Harnisch went 1 for 4 with a team-best three RBIs while Nico Boza added two RBIs.

Starter Ben Kovel (1-1) was saddled with the loss after giving up five earned earns on three hits in 1.2 innings of work.

The visitors got on the board first in the opening inning. Faicchio worked a two-out walk before Matthews stepped in and clubbed his first collegiate home run, a towering, two-run shot that cleared the left-field fence, giving the Seahawks the early lead.

In the bottom of the inning, the Rams wasted little time in responding with two runs of their own. Andy Semo singled to right field that scored Jake Guercio, who walked to start the game for the Rams. Mexico fouled out to leftfield, as Jason Coules tagged up and scored the tying run.

The Seahawks broke the tie game with three runs in the second to lead by three. Ruggiero led off the second with a double down the left field line. Melfi drew a one-out walk before Ruggiero moved to third on a wild pitch. Maimu Kobayashi drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases.

Kovel's pitch went past the Rams' catcher as Ruggiero was able to cross the plate, as Wagner went ahead 3-2.

Torres ripped a double to right-center that plated home both Melfi and Kobayashi as the Seahawks went up 5-2. A walk to Faicchio ended Kovel's afternoon. Connor Haywood came on and recorded the final out of the inning.

Fordham got to within one in the bottom of the fourth. Mexico led off with a double to right before coming into score on the double to left by Zach Selinger. The second batter of the inning, T.J. Wachter, connected on a double to right that brought in Selinger, as the Rams cut the deficit to a run, 5-4.

Following a scoreless fifth, both offenses were on full display, as the two teams combined for 15 runs in the sixth.

Wagner sent 13 batters to the plate in the sixth, scoring nine runs on four hits while capitalizing on two Fordham miscues in taking a 14-4 lead.

Ruggiero led off the frame with his second double of the game. Cody Bey followed with a walk that ended Haywood's afternoon. Joseph Quintal came on in relief and walked Melfi that loaded the bases.

On the first pitch that Baker saw, he roped one to center field as both Ruggiero and Bey came home to score, making it a 7-4 advantage in favor of Wagner.

Kobayashi drew a walk and all the runners moved up a base on the wild pitch that allowed Melfi to cross the plate for the Seahawks' eighth run of the contest.

A free pass to Torres reloaded the bases as Faiccho connected on a two-run double to left-center that scored both Baker and Kobayashi as Wagner led by six, 10-4.

Following a pitching change, Matthews reached on a fielder's choice to first and advanced to second on the error as both Faicchio and Torres scored to make it 12-4.

Griffin Selby laced a double to left-center, bringing in Matthews for Wagner's 13th run of the contest. The Green & White's ninth run of the frame came on a failed pickoff attempt, as Selby was able to come home.

Fordham would make a comeback in the bottom half of the inning off John LaPointe. A pair of walks with a single by Mexico in-between loaded the bases for the Rams. LaPointe settled down and got the next two batters out before Boza sent a two-run double down the leftfield line.

Guercio walked to reload the bases. Coules also drew a free pass, as Wagner's lead was cut in half, 14-7.

Nick LePre came on to face Harnisch, who abruptly cleared the bases with a three-run double to right-center, as the Rams trailed by four, 14-10. LePre was able to get the inning-ending ground out to end the threat.

Michael Taylor sent a flyball to left in the bottom of the seventh, which Mexico was able to tag up and score, making it a 14-11 contest.

The Seahawks scored the final five runs of the contest in winning by eight. In the top of the eighth, Ruggiero led off with a walk and a steal of second. Bey followed with a walk, but Ruggiero moved to third on the wild pitch.

With the count in his favor, Melfi connected on his second home run of the season, a three-run shot to centerfield as Wagner went up 17-11.

In the top of the ninth, Faicchio led off with his team-leading fourth round-tripper of the season, an inside-the-park home run as the Seahawks went up 18-11.

The team's home run lead didn't last long as Ruggiero matched Faicchio with his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to center, as Wagner put a close on their highest run-scoring game of the season so far.

Wagner will close out the week with a visit to Philadelphia, PA to take on the University of Pennsylvania, beginning on Friday afternoon.
