Baseball Falls In 10 Innings, 3-2, On Friday Afternoon

Bridgeport, CT – For the second straight game, the Wagner baseball team and the Sacred Heart University Pioneers needed extra innings to decide the outcome. Following the Seahawks earning a 17-inning, 9-7 victory in a game suspended from Thursday earlier in the day, the Pioneers walked off with a 3-2 win in ten innings on Friday afternoon.

With the loss, Wagner falls to 11-24 and 8-21 in Northeast Conference (NEC) action while SHU moves to 21-23 and 16-10 in league action. These two teams will close out the 2021 regular season on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Jared Gillen collected two hits on the afternoon while Cody Bey and David Melfi drove in a run apiece for the visitors.

Nicholas Hanson, who was making his first collegiate start this afternoon, allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings while striking out three and walking three. Classmate Jagger Duquette took the loss after giving up the winning run in the tenth on two hits despite striking out three.

Robert Farruggio and Danny Glendon each had two hits to pace the Pioneers at the plate. Mark Smith, who was credited with the game-winning RBI bunt, along with Austin Markmann and Isiah Daubon, each drove in an RBI.

Jake Babuschak earned his fifth win of the season after giving up just two runs on eight hits over nine innings of work while striking out five and not walking a batter. David Aufiero picked up his second save.

After a scoreless first inning, Wagner scored the game's first run. With two outs, Tyler Sanfilippo doubled down the left-field line to get into scoring position. Caleb Ward singled to short as Sanfilippo moved to third. Wagner loaded the bases after Jake Lutz was hit by a pitch. The next batter, Bey, singled home Sanfilippo as the Seahawks went ahead 1-0.

Sacred Heart answered back to take the lead, 2-1, as Markmann singled to right to score Justin Jordan. Daubon sent a grounder to second as Elijah Brown was able to score, putting the Pioneers in front.

The game remained that way until the top of the sixth, as the Seahawks plated the tying run. With one out in the inning, Freddy Sabido reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on a failed pick-off attempt by Babuschak. Melfi stepped in and unloaded a single to center field, as Sabido raced around the bases to tie the game at 2-2.

Duquette gave up back-to-back doubles to Farruggio and Glendon, but Smith, who pinch-ran for Farruggio, was held up at third. Joe Emerson was intentionally walked to load the bases with no one out.

The freshman reliever regrouped on the mound, getting Anthony Porrino to ground to Mike Ruggiero, who alertly fired a strike to Melfi at home for the first out. Trevor Fagan came on as a pinch-hitter for Joey Skarad but could not catch up to Duquette's pitch, as he struck out swinging. With the bases still loaded, Duquette was able to field the grounder off the bat of Jordan and throw over to Sanfilippo as the game headed for extras.

Wagner was retired in order in their half of the tenth. In the bottom half of the stanza, Brown drew a walk, stole second, and wound up on third on a wild pitch. Duquette was able to strike out Markmann looking at strike three for the first out of the inning.

Daubon was intentionally walked to set up a force play. Smith was able to push a bunt past the Wagner infielder as Brown came into score and even the series at 1-1, heading into Saturday's season finale.
