Baseball Falls To Sacred Heart In Regular Season Finale

Bridgeport, CT – The Wagner baseball team dropped the final game of the series against Sacred Heart 16-4 at Veterans Memorial Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Seahawks finish the year with an 11-25 overall record and 8-22 in Northeast Conference (NEC) action. The Pioneers, who conclude the year at 22-23 and 17-10 in league play, will be the No. 3 seed in the upcoming NEC Championship, as they will take on the No. 2 seed and defending league champions, Central Connecticut.

Cody Bey, Mike Ruggiero, and Jared Gillen each had two hits for the visitors in the season finale. Bey led the way with two RBI while Ruggiero, Caleb Ward, David Melfi, and Ethan Valdez each drove in a run.

Justin Beyer went 3.2 innings in his final start, striking out four batters while allowing six runs on nine hits. The Niagara Falls, NY didn't factor into the decision. Brandon Demma was tagged with the loss after giving up two runs in two innings of work.

Robert Farruggio collected three hits for the Pioneers. Austin Markmann, Danny Glendon, and Joey Skarad had two hits. Joe Emerson drove in a game-high five RBI while Farruggio plated home three RBI.

Tyler Briggs earned the win after not allowing a run in his 2.2 innings of relief while striking out six batters. Brendan Coffey fired three scoreless frames to pick up his ninth save of the season.

The Pioneers went ahead early on, 2-0, as Markmann singled to right to bring in Elijah Brown for the game's first run. Farruggio sent one back up the middle that scored Markmann as SHU increased the lead to 2-0.

The Seahawks tied the game up at 2-2 in their half of the second. Griffin Schneider led off with a double down the left-field line. A walk to Tyler Sanfilippo gave the Green & White a pair of runners on with no one out.

Both runners moved into scoring position on the sacrifice bunt from Freddy Sabido. The next batter, Caleb Ward, sent a grounder up the third-base line that scored Schneider as Wagner trimmed the deficit. Melfi knotted the game at 2-2 with an RBI single back up the middle.

Sacred Heart added a run in the bottom of the second and third, building a 4-2 lead. Emerson led off the frame with a walk before Skarad singled to left. With two outs, Justin Jordan singled to right field and moved to second on a fielding mishap by Schneider in right, which allowed Emerson to score and Skarad to reach third base.

In the bottom of the third, Daubon walked and moved to third on the single to center from Farruggio. Emerson sent a grounder back to Beyer as Daubon crossed the plate, making it 4-2.

Wagner erupted for four runs in taking the lead, 6-4, in the top of the fourth. Valdez reached on a bunt single which scored Ward that cut the lead down to one, 4-3. The next batter, Bey, ripped a double to left field that cleared the bases and gave the visitors a 5-4 advantage.

Ruggiero reached on an infield single to his counterpart at short, as Bey crossed the plate to make it 6-4.

Sacred Heart answered back with three in the bottom half. Farruggio connected on a two-run single to center that tied the game at 6-6. Wagner went to the bullpen as Demma came on for Beyer. The first batter that he saw was Glendon, who reached on a bunt single. Emerson drew a walk that plated home Daubon as the Pioneers regained the lead, 7-6.

The Pioneers added two more in the sixth to make it 9-6, with Emerson coming through with the big hit in the frame, a double down the right-field line to score Glendon and Farruggio.

The home team increased its lead thanks to a five-run seventh inning, as the Pios upped the score to 14-6. Two straight walks with the bases loaded made it 11-6 as Nick LePre came on for Eli Shedd. LePre walked Porrino which made it 12-6 before Skarad singled home a pair for Sacred Heart's final runs of the game.
