Baseball Falls In Series Opener Against Central Connecticut

Lakewood, NJ – Both Wagner and Central Connecticut's starting pitchers did not allow a run over the first four innings before the Blue Devils scored a pair in the fifth and added three over the final two frames as the Seahawks dropped the series opener, 6-2, on Friday afternoon.

With the loss, Wagner drops to 8-17 overall and 5-14 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play while CCSU moves to 16-9 and 13-6 in league contests.

Griffin Schneider collected two hits on the afternoon while he and Emil Matti scored a run apiece. David Melfi was credited with the lone RBI for the Seahawks.

Ryan Lauk (1-6) gave up three runs (one earned) on five hits in defeat. The Mullica Hill, NJ native yielded six walks and struck out four batters. The four strikeouts extended his streak as he has recorded at least four strikeouts in each of his nine starts.

Dan Covino, Buddy Dewaine, and Mike Torniero each had two hits for the Blue Devils while Dave Matthews drove in and scored two runs in the win. Sam Loda also crossed the plate twice for the visitors.

Andrew Braun (5-1) gave up two runs on six hits in 6.1 innings of work. Jake Neuman earned the save after working out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth.

The Blue Devils broke the stalemate in the top of the fifth. Matthews led off with a walk and moved to second on a single by Torniero. Elliot Good reached on an error by Wagner's second baseman, Jake Lutz, who overthrew Tyler Sanfilippo at first, allowing Matthews to score the first run of the game.

The next batter, Covino, sent a double to left-center that brought in Good to give the visitors a two-run lead. CCSU added one more in the sixth in taking a 3-0 advantage as Torniero singled to left-center to bring in Loda.

Wagner got on the board in the bottom half of the inning. Matti led off with a single to left. Gillen then sent a two-out single to shortstop that gave the Seahawks two runners on base. Melfi connected on a run-scoring single but was thrown out at second just before Gillen was able to cross the plate to end the inning.

The Seahawks continued to close the gap in their half of the seventh, as they trailed by one, 3-2. Two straight singles from Schneider and Sanfilippo ended Braun's afternoon. Dylan Sabia came on in relief.

During Matti's at-bat against Sabia, both Sanfilippo and Schneider moved up on a balk and Schneider came into score, as Loda could not handle the ball in the dirt, as it trickled to the backstop.

CCSU didn't waste time in getting the runs back, as Loda singled to lead off the eighth and came into score on Matthews home run to right-center, which gave the Blue Devils a 5-2 lead. Dewaine added a solo home run down the right-field in the ninth to seal the win.

These two teams continue the series on Saturday afternoon with the first-pitch from FirstEnergy Park set for 1:00 p.m.
