Seahawks Fall 9-3 To Central Connecticut On Saturday

Lakewood, NJ – After jumping out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning, the Wagner baseball team surrendered nine straight runs, falling to Central Connecticut, 9-3, on Saturday afternoon at FirstEnergy Park.

The Seahawks drop to 8-18 overall and 5-15 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play while the Blue Devils improve to 17-9 and 14-6 in league contests.

Jared Gillen notched three hits while scoring and driving in a run in today's contest. Griffin Schneider also had a multi-hit day, collecting two hits in three trips at-bat. Johnny Kampes and Tyler Sanfilippo each added an RBI.

Nick Zuppe (3-2) was tagged with the loss after lasting 2.2 innings, in which he allowed nine runs (seven earned) on six hits. Justin Beyer worked 6.1 scoreless innings in relief of Zuppe, giving up just three hits while striking out two and walking a batter.

The Blue Devils got two hits apiece from their first three hitters in Dan Covino, Jay Devito, and Noah Martinez, as the trio went a combined 6 for 13 with four runs scored and drove in four RBI. Covino led the way with two RBI and two runs scored. Matt Bertochi was the fourth CCSU player with two hits, as he, like Covino, drove in two and scored two runs.

Brandon Fox (5-2) went six innings, giving up three runs while striking out four in recording the win. The CCSU bullpen, composed of Matt Shane, Tim Buchek, and Dylan Sabia pitched the final three innings, allowing just two hits without giving up a run.

Zuppe got through the top of the first unscathed as the Seahawks would give their starter an early run. Ethan Valdez led off with a single to left and moved to second on the sacrifice bunt by Mike Ruggiero.

Trailing in the count, Gillen found the pitch he liked and connected on the first of his three hits, sending a hard-hit ball to left that Valdez was able to come around to put the Green & White on the board.

Both pitchers put up zeroes in the second before the Blue Devils erupted for a big third inning. CCSU batted around and in total, sent 13 men to the plate in the third, scoring nine runs on seven hits.

Bertochi led off the inning with a ground-rule double before Covino brought him to tie the game at 1-1 with a single. Devito walked to give the visitors a pair on base. Martinez took Zuppe's 1-2 pitch down the right-field line for a double as Covino crossed the plate, giving the Blue Devils a 2-1 lead.

Central Connecticut carried the momentum, as Buddy Dewaine lofted a fly ball to right that was misplayed by Schneider, which allowed Devito to score, making it 3-1. Sam Loda cleared the bases with a two-run double to left that pushed the lead to 5-1.

Following a walk to Dave Matthews, Zuppe was able to strike out Hunter Pasqualini and get Peyton Stephens to check swing a ball in play, as Sanfilippo was able to scoop up the ball and beat Stephens to the bag.

Bertochi sent his second double of the inning to right, which plated both Matthews and Loda that increased the lead to 7-1. Covino added an RBI single to right, which plated Bertochi and put an end to Zuppe's afternoon.

Beyer came on and gave up an RBI single to Devito, which made it 9-1 in favor of the visitors before Beyer ended the inning as Martinez flew out to left.

The Seahawks tried to stage a late comeback, scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth, which cut the deficit to 9-3.

Gillen and David Melfi each had back-to-back singles before Schneider moved them into scoring position on a grounder to first. On the first pitch that Kampes saw from Fox, he roped a single to center that brought in Gillen.

The next batter, Sanfilippo, lofted a sacrifice fly to center, as Melfi tagged up and raced home for the second run of the inning. Fox was able to keep it at that as AJ Medrano fouled out to first to end the threat.

Wagner had a chance the next inning to continue chipping away at the lead. Emil Matti led off with a hard-hit single to center. Quinn Mimnaugh reached on a fielding error by the CCSU second baseman, giving the Seahawks runners on first and second. Shane got Ruggiero to foul to third before being lifted for Buchek.

Buchek induced a grounder off the bat of Gillen and retired Melfi to end the threat. Gillen added his third hit of the game on a two-out single in the ninth. He was stranded on first to end the game.

Wagner and Central Connecticut conclude the three-game series on Sunday afternoon from FirstEnergy Park with the first-pitch set for 1:00 p.m.
