Softball Travels To Merrimack For NEC Opener

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College softball team will open Northeast Conference (NEC) play and put its undefeated record on the line this weekend, as the Seahawks travel to Merrimack for doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.

All games will stream live on NECFrontRow, with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm each day.

Wagner swept its opening weekend with four victories over Colgate and Lafayette, earning three shutout wins in the process while producing a run differential of 35-4.

Graduate student Zoe Bender and pitcher Eve Harvey earned NEC weekly awards for their performances, as Bender was named NEC Player of the Week while Harvey earned Pitcher of the Week honors.

Bender recorded nine hits and scored 12 runs on 12 at bats as Wagner went 4-0 to start the season. The Seahawks' leadoff hitter also stole two bases and drew two walks on the weekend. Her .750 batting average is currently tops in the nation.

In the circle, Harvey started her season in the circle with two dominant outings, earning two victories while keeping the opposition off the board in 11 innings.

The junior earned the complete game victory over Colgate on Saturday, striking out six batters while only allowing six hits. One day later, Harvey struck out three and only allowed two hits in four innings against Lafayette.

Harvey and graduate student Amelia Van Orman both have 0.00 ERAs coming into this weekend, while the Seahawk offense features three players with batting averages over .550 in Bender, Van Orman (.600), and junior Alexis Silinonte (.556).

The 4-0 start to the season is Wagner's best since the 1991 season, when the Green and White also started 4-0. The longest the Seahawks have ever been undefeated to start a season dates back to the 1981-82 season, when Wagner started the year 6-0-1.

Merrimack enters the weekend with a 2-4 record, most recently earning a sweep over Maine.

Following this weekend's action, the Seahawks will travel to Saint Francis U for doubleheaders on March 27 and 28.
