Baseball Splits Saturday's Doubleheader With Maine

Brooklyn, NY – The Wagner College baseball team (2-2) split their doubleheader with Maine (4-3) on Saturday, taking the nightcap by a 6-2 count thanks to a two-RBI game from newcomer Jared Gillen

The series finale is set for Sunday at noon.

In the series opener, Henry Martinez and Cody Bey each had a hit in the contest for the Seahawks. Starter Ryan Lauk (0-2) gave up two runs in 5.1 innings of work and recorded four strikeouts. John LaPointe, who came on in relief of Lauk, went the final 3.2 frames while matching Lauk with four strikeouts.

Nicholas Sinacola gave up one run in his seven innings of work in picking up the win for Maine. He walked three and struck out 12 batters. Matthew Pushard finished the final two innings, striking out a batter.

Over the first four and a half innings, both teams played to a stalemate until the bottom of the fifth. Caleb Ward was hit by an errant pitch and Tyler Sanfilippo drew a five-pitch walk, givinig Wagner runners on. With two outs, Wagner sent up DiMaggio Cazares and during the at-bat, Sinacola bounced one that got past the catcher, allowing Ward to cross the plate to give Wagner the lead.

Maine scored all of their runs in the top of the sixth as Sean Lawlor sent a solo home run over the left centerfield wall to tie the game at 1-1. Joe Bramanti followed with a double that ended Lauk's afternoon. LaPointe walked the next two batters before getting Mejia to pop out to second as the infield fly rule went into effect for the second out. Jake Rainess cleared the bases on the second pitch he saw from LaPointe as the visitors went up 5-1 and held on by that same margin.

In the nightcap of the doubleheader, the Seahawks struck for the game's first runs as Gillen ripped a single up-the-middle that plated both Martinez and Bey. Pat Gallagher kept the Black Bears off the board over the first 4.1 innings.

In the fifth, Gallagher worked into a bit of trouble, giving up a double to Rainess followed by a walk to Connor Goodman before Zuppe came in.
Scout Knotts was hit by Zuppe's 2-2 pitch before the veteran Seahawk hurler settled down and struck out Lawlor for the second out. Cody Bey fielded a grounder at third and alertly tagged out Goodman as the Seahawks escaped potential trouble.

Maine cut the Wagner lead to two, 3-1, in the top of the seventh as Goodman sent a grounder to short which allowed Quinn McDaniel to cross the plate.

Wagner added three scores in the eighth with Jake Lutz sending an RBI single to left-center. Mike Ruggiero drove him in with a double to left. David Melfi singled and came around to score as Henry Martinez lofted a single to center.

Maine tried to rally back in the ninth, but only got one run on a sacrifice fly by Knotts as Kevin Wiseman was able to get Lawlor to fly out to left to end the game.

Gallagher didn't allow a run in his 4.1 innings of work, but didn't factor in the decision.  Zuppe picked up the win, after going 3.1 innings allowing one run on three hits while striking out three. Wiseman earned his second save of the year, tossing the final 1.1 frames and fanning two Black Bears.
