Staten Island, NY – Five multi-goal scorers paced another high-scoring afternoon for the Wagner College women's lacrosse team as the Seahawks raced past the Long Island University (LIU) Sharks 14-3, Tuesday March 10, at Hameline Field
.
Wagner moved to 2-0 in Northeast Conference (NEC) thanks to a seven-point afternoon from senior
Erin Kerstetter, a hat trick from fellow senior
Victoria Tucci, and two-goal games from juniors
Kasey Dorney and
Maria Henwood, as well as sophomore
Megan Greco.
Defensively, the Seahawks held the Sharks to 10 goals below their season average. Dorney, Kerstetter and Henwood each caused at least two turnovers, as did junior
Aileen Hannan and freshman
Ryan Murphy. In net, junior
Lauren DiStefano stopped a season-best 12 shots, posting a career-best .800 save percentage.
Paige Sherlock (two) and Elise Person found the back of the net for LIU, and Hailey Duchnowski made 17 saves.
How it Happened:
The offenses were both held in check early, as neither team could break through over the first 13 minutes, combining for just seven shots on goal over that span.
Dorney finally opened the scoring with 16:41 left in the opening half, with Kerstetter making it 2-0 less than 30 seconds later. Tucci sandwiched her first two goals around a pair of scores from LIU, making it 4-2 in favor of the Green and White.
After another scoring drought from both teams that lasted nearly five minutes, Tucci's hat trick-completing goal opened a run of four Wagner goals in the final four minutes of the half, with Greco, Kerstetter, and Henwood netting the other three.
LIU struck first to open the second half, but that was as close as they would get. Kerstetter assisted on goals from Greco and Henwood, then, after another goal by Dorney, completed her hat trick, making it 12-3 Wagner.
Sophomore
Lindsay MacLachlan scored just before the midway point of the half to make it a 10-goal game, and Kerstetter added her fourth goal of the day to close out the scoring.
Beyond the Numbers:
- Distefano's 12 saves pushed her over 200 during her time on Grymes Hill
- Kerstetter's first goal of the day gave her 90 for her career
- The double-digit win marked the 10th such occurrence for the program since Michelle Tumolo took over prior to the 2019 season
Next Up For Wagner:
The Seahawks remain at home for another NEC contest against the Bryant Bulldogs on Saturday, March 13. Opening draw is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. from Hameline Field.
