Wagner Falls To NJIT In 2021 Season Opener, 1-0

Newark, NJ – The Wagner College women's soccer team (0-1-0) fell to NJIT (2-0-0) in its season opener on Sunday afternoon at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

How It Happened…
  • NJIT nearly scored in the opening two minutes of the contest as Nichole Loehle sent a shot towards the top right that was turned away by sophomore goalkeeper, Erin Kelly.
  • Wagner's first chance in the match came in the 10th minute as Gabby Cipriano sent a low-liner towards the bottom right of the goal that was stopped by NJIT's Molly Saylor.
  • The Seahawks had three shot attempts by Julia Fitzsimmons, Mya Donnelly, and Cailtin Filja, but all three attempts were misdirected away from the goal.
  • Kelly was tested again in the 23rd as Christine Conaghy sent a shot that Kelly was able to make the save on.
  • NJIT's Lauren Chamberlain scored the only goal of the afternoon in the 38th minute, which proved to be the game-winner.
  • In the 59th minute, Mya Donnelly created separation and gave the Seahawks an opportunity for the tying-goal but, her chance was thwarted by Saylor.
  • Wagner had one final run in the 85th minute as junior tri-captain Luisa Barone was able to boot the ball that found the arms of Saylor.

  • Mya Donnelly, Gabby Cipriano, and freshman Caitlin Filja recorded two shot attempts against the Highlanders, with Cipriano's two attempts finding their way on net.
  • Wagner saw four freshmen make their collegiate debuts: Filja, Rebecca Wood, Alexa Rispoli, and Ari Michitti.
  • Filja (70 minutes), Wood (74 minutes), and Rispoli (61 minutes) each earned their first collegiate starts at NJIT while Michitti played 23 minutes off the bench.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Kelly was tested early, stopping four of the first five shots. She finished with six saves on the afternoon.

  • The Seahawks will close out its non-conference slate on Friday, March 5, as Wagner travels to Philadelphia, PA to tangle with the Drexel University Dragons.
