Piscataway, NJ - The Wagner College women's basketball team, winners of six straight contests, will close out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a pair of road games in the Garden State, beginning on Saturday afternoon, as the Seahawks are set to take on Big Ten member, Rutgers University.
WAGNER ATHLETICS SPECTATOR POLICY...
- In accordance with New York State and New York City guidelines the Wagner College Athletic Department has announced the following spectator policy for all indoor athletic competitions:
- All guests will be required to wear masks
- All guests over 11 years old must show proof of vaccination
- Children under 12 must be accompanied by a vaccinated adult
- Physical tickets must be picked up on game day (can still be purchased and reserved in advance)

OPENING TIP...
- The Green & White stayed undefeated at the Spiro Sports Center this season as Wagner earned a near wire-to-wire triumph over Big East member, St. John's, 62-59, last Sunday afternoon.
- Senior Emilija Krista Grava poured in a game-high 20 points on 10 of 13 shooting from the floor in 29 minutes of action.
- Rutgers enters play on Saturday riding a two-game win streak, as they recently defeated NEC member, Central Connecticut, 56-45, at Jersey Mike's Arena. Tyia Singleton led the way with 16 points and nine rebounds while Lasha Petree added ten points in the victory.
- Wagner is playing a member of the Big Ten for the second time in three years, after the Seahawks opened the 2019-20 campaign at then No. 4 / No. 5 ranked, Maryland (November 5).
SERIES BREAKDOWN AGAINST RUTGERS...
- Saturday's contest with the Scarlet Knights is just the sixth all-time meeting between the two schools, with Rutgers holding a 5-0 edge in the head-to-head series.
- These two programs are meeting for the first time since 2014-15 when season when Wagner hosted then-No. 24 ranked Rutgers at the Spiro Sports Center back on November 25 (Lost, 81-53).
- The Seahawks are making their first trip to Piscataway, NJ since December 12, 2013.
- Rutgers is 1-0 against members of the Northeast Conference (NEC) this season, defeating Central Connecticut, 56-45, back on December 14.
- The Seahawks are playing a Big Ten member for the first time since opening the 2019-20 season on the road at then-No. 4/5 ranked, Maryland, back on November 5.
SEAHAWKS AGAINST THE BIG TEN CONFERENCE...
- Wagner will be looking for their first-ever win against a member of the Big Ten, as the Seahawks are 0-14 in program history against the current members of the conference.
- The Green & White have faced the University of Maryland (0-4) and Rutgers (0-5) the most times while also competing against the University of Illinois (0-1), The Ohio State University (0-1), and Penn State University (0-2).
KRISTA GRAVA AND LOCENIECE SWEEP NEC WEEKLY HONORS...
- Senior forward Emilija Krista Grava and freshman guard Lina Loceniece swept the weekly Northeast Conference (NEC) awards, the league announced on Monday afternoon.
- Krista Grava earned her fifth NEC Player of the Week award of her career and first of the season while Loceniece collected her second straight Rookie of the Week honor.
- This marks the first time since February 18, 2014, that a pair of Wagner teammates took home both NEC honors as Ugo Nwaigwe was named Player of Week while Jasmine Nwajei was tabbed Rookie of the Week.
DEFENSIVE LOCKDOWN...
- Through December 15, Wagner is one of the top defensive teams in the Northeast Conference (NEC) as well as the nation.
- The Seahawks rank first in the league in field-goal percentage defense (35.5%), scoring defense (55.0 ppg), scoring margin (6.9), steals per game (9.1 spg), three-point field goal percentage defense (20.0%), and turnovers forced (21.12).
- Among all teams in the NCAA, Wagner ranks fifth in the country in three-point field goal percentage defense, as they have yet to allow their opponents to convert on 30.0 percent or more from the outside.
- Wagner is 39th in the nation in turnovers forced as head coach Terrell Coburn's team has forced 15 or more turnovers in every game thus far and has forced 20 or more turnovers in four games this season.
- Lastly, the Green & White are among the top-50 in the country in scoring defense, allowing 55.0 points per game. The Seahawks have held their opponents under the 60-point mark in all three December games.
FROM A-TO-Z...
- Senior point Zhaneia Thybulle continues to shine on Grymes Hill.
- The Elmont, NY native leads the circuit in assists (47) and assists per game (5.9 apg) as is second in minutes played, averaging 35.2 a contest.
- Among all players, the veteran point guard ranks among the top-20 in the nation in assists per game and top-50 in total assists.
SIX WINS AND COUNTING...
- Wagner is in the midst of a six-game winning streak and winners of seven of eight to start the season.
- The team last rattled off six straight from January 14 to February 5, 2021, en route to a No. 2 seed in the NEC Tournament.
- Over the last six games, the Seahawks are outscoring their opponents by nearly 9.0 points per game (62.8 to 54.2) while converting on 45.0 percent shooting from the floor and 37.9 percent from three-point range.
- Their opponents, however, are only hitting on 36.3 percent from the field and being held to just 20.9 percent (27 of 129) from long distance.
- Krista Grava leads the way for the Seahawks, averaging 16.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.
- Teammate Kem Nwabudu has chipped in 10.7 points per game on 53.7 percent shooting from the field.
- Alex Cowan and Thybulle have each added 8.8 points per game with Thybulle dishing out 6.2 helpers throughout the win streak.
STARTING FIVE...
- Head coach Terrell Coburn has used the same starting five of Alex Cowan, Zhaneia Thybulle, Drayah Heyward, Emilija Krista Grava, and Kem Nwabudu in all eight games, going 7-1 during this span.
- Wagner's starters are shooting a collective 44.0 percent from the field and 75.5 percent from the free-throw line.
- The oppositions starting five are only netting 39.9 points per game while being held to just 15.5 percent from three-point distance.
HOME COOKING...
- The Seahawks are 5-0 this season at the Spiro Sports Center. The Green & White has averaged 62.0 points per game at home while converting on 45.8 percent from the field.
- Over the first five games on Grymes Hill, Wagner is a +8.4 in scoring margin while holding their opponents to just 19.8 percent shooting from three-point range.
- Krista Grava is the lone Seahawk thus far to average double-figures, as she is scoring 14.4 points per game at the Spiro Sports Center this season on 46.0 percent shooting from the field and a perfect 11 of 11 from the free-throw line.

- Senior forward Emilija Krista Grava became the 25th member of the 1,000 point club on November 28 against New Hampshire.
- Krista Grava, who recorded the milestone feat with 59.2 seconds showing on the clock in the second quarter, finished the game with 11 points while also grabbing five rebounds.

SCOUTING RUTGERS...
- The Scarlet Knights will look for their third straight win when they host the Seahawks on Saturday afternoon.
- Osh Brown leads the team in scoring (8.2 ppg), rebounding (9.0 rpg) and minutes played (27.4 mpg).
- Collectively, Rutgers is averaging 56.0 points per game while hitting on 39.2 percent from the field and only shooting 25.6 percent from three-point range.
NEXT UP FOR WAGNER...
- The Seahawks will close out their non-conference schedule on Tuesday, December 21, as the team will travel to South Orange, NJ to take on Big East member, Seton Hall for a noon tipoff.
