Staten Island, NY – Wagner College Director of Athletics
Walt Hameline has announced the hiring of
Gaby Chau as the program's third head women's fencing coach. Chau brings a plethora of fencing experience to Grymes Hill, following a four-year collegiate career for the Boston College Eagles.
"I'm thrilled to be joining Wagner College as head coach of the varsity women's fencing team," Chau said. "It's a promising program filled with dedicated student athletes, and I look forwards to helping the team achieve its potential. My goals include qualifying as many athletes as possible to NCAA Regionals and to recruit a strong foundation for the future of the program."
During her time on Chestnut Hill, where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Chau was an active member of the Eagles squad, being named Captain and Team Manager in her junior year.
Competing in the sabre weapon, Chau qualified for the NCAA Northeast Regionals twice, with her best finish coming at 13th in her junior season, following a 32-2 conference record which saw her named First Team Northeast Fencing Conference.
The Newtown, CT native hit the ground running when she arrived on campus, helping the Eagles squad to a Northeast Fencing Conference Title with a 12-2 effort and placing 12th at the ACC Fencing Championships during her freshman season.
As a captain and team manager, Chau accepted extra responsibilities as a member of the Eagles squad. In addition to creating and leading practices, she was also tasked with organizing home meets.
Chau takes over a Seahawk fencing squad that saw a program-record five fencers compete at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic South Regionals, hosted by Duke University, in 2020.
Apart from her coaching duties, Chau will be pursuing a Master's Degree in Business Administration at Wagner.
