Clinton, SC – The Wagner College softball team will open its 2020 season at the Scotsman Invitational, hosted by Presbyterian College.
The Seahawks will play five games in three days, starting with a doubleheader on Friday against Wright State and Presbyterian. On Saturday, Wagner will face off with Wright State and Cleveland State, before facing off with Cleveland State once again on Sunday morning.
Out of the four-team field this weekend, the Seahawks are the only team to have not seen any game action on the season. Presbyterian enters the weekend with a 9-4 record, while Cleveland State is 2-3 on the year. Wright State comes into Friday's games with a 3-6 record.
Wagner, led by third-year head coach
Lindsey Ubrun, returns second team All-NEC selection
Amelia Van Orman. The senior finished the 2019 season with 33 hits, 24 runs scored, and 17 RBIs on the year as well as a .273 overall batting average.
Van Orman's biggest performance of the year, however, was not in the batter's box, but on the pitcher's mound, where she guided the Seahawks to a stunning 1-0 upset of Purdue in Wagner's season opener. The junior earned the start in the circle and turned in a gem, allowing just four hits while giving up one walk and striking out one batter in a complete game victory.
The Seahawks also return senior
Kaila Smith, who is currently fourth on the all-time record list with 21 home runs, one behind former Seahawk great
Kelsey Parker.
In the pitching circle, sophomores
Eve Harvey and
Kayla Hooks return after combining for 32 starts and 11 wins a season ago.
Wagner's senior class includes Smith, Van Orman, outfielders
Zoe Bender and
Hannah Lewis, catchers
Kyleigh Norris and
Angela Mazurkiewicz, as well as infielders
Christina Harkins and
Alyssa Tucker, four of which saw action in 40 or more games last season.
Wagner's newcomers include freshmen
Bianca Worthy,
Alexa Garcia,
Madison Ferrao, and
Haley Peaslee, along with sophomores
Penelope Russ,
Nora Conway, and
Makenzie Miller.
The Seahawks finished the 2019 season with a 15-29 record, but won two out of their last four games over CCSU and Fairleigh Dickinson.
Following this weekend's competition, the Seahawks will play in the Norfolk State Tournament, starting on March 6.
Wagner's home opener is scheduled for March 26, when the Green and White play host to Kent State, before opening NEC play two days later at Central Connecticut.
The 18-game conference slate commences on April 25, when Wagner hosts Sacred Heart for a home doubleheader. This year's NEC Tournament is scheduled for May 7-10.
