Norfolk, VA -
The Wagner College baseball team lost the middle game of its three-game series at Norfolk State, 5-3, on Saturday afternoon from Marty L. Miller Field.

The Spartans jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning. The Seahawks got a run back in the fourth as junior Emil Matti doubled down the right field line, driving home senior Tyler Sanfilippo. Norfolk added a score in the bottom half of the frame that made it 3-1.

In the top of the fifth, Sanfilippo sent a two-out single to right center, scoring DiMaggio Cazares, who had singled and stolen second.  Norfolk State doubled its lead following an RBI base hit to right off-the-bat of Ty Hanchey. The visitors once again found themselves trailing by a run, as, in the top of the eighth, newcomer David Melfi singled through the left side to bring in Freddy Sabido as the Seahawks were down, 4-3.

Brandon Crosby added an insurance run in the home half of the eighth as the Spartans went up 5-3 and held on to win by that same margin.

Junior right-hander Pat Gallagher recorded five strikeouts, walked two, gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits in his first start of the season. The Worcester, MA native lasted 3.1 frames in taking the loss. Cazares led the way for the Seahawks with two hits. Fellow newcomers Cody Bey, Melfi and AJ Medrano all added a hit as well.

Adam Collins and Ty Hanchey had two hits for the Spartans with Hanchey driving in two RBI and Collins crossing the plate twice. Ridge Walker allowed just two runs on six hits while walking two and striking out seven Seahawks over seven innings in picking up the win. James Deloatch worked the final two innings in earning the save.
