Philadelphia, PA - The Wagner College women's soccer team, fresh off its thrilling, 3-2 overtime victory over Iona on Sunday afternoon, will look for back-to-back victories as the Seahawks close the non-conference portion of their schedule on Thursday evening against the Temple University Owls.
LAST TIME OUT FOR WAGNER:
- The Seahawks overcame a 2-1 deficit, getting the game-winning score from junior midfielder, Le'la Allen in the first overtime session, and 99th minute overall, in overtaking Iona, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon.
- The visiting Gaels took a 1-0 lead in the 26', as Faith Preziosi intercepted a pass, made a long run down the left side of the field and crossed the ball into the middle of the box where Amber Crispin put a foot on it and got it past Seahawk goalkeeper, Erin Kelly.
- Wagner responded two minutes later as the home team capitalized on a free-kick. Senior tri-captain Maria Nunez rocketed a shot towards the upper left corner of the net that tied the match at 1-1.
- For Nunez, it was her team-leading third goal of the season and 11th of her collegiate career.
- The Gaels got the go-ahead marker just before the half as Sofia Giamanco collected the loose ball and buried the chance as Iona regained the lead, 2-1.
- With ten minutes remaining in regulation, the Gaels were called for a foul inside the box as the officials awarded a penalty kick.
- Freshman defender Annie White was chosen to take the shot for the Green & White. The first-year Seahawk promptly stepped up and pelted one past a diving Emma Havrilla to even the score at 2-2.
- On the lone chance in the extra session, Nunez took the corner kick from the right side and booted the ball into the box. Following a scrum, Allen collected a deflection off an Iona player and blasted one past Havrilla to set off a wild Seahawk celebration.
SERIES HISTORY:
- Thursday's contest marks the eighth all-time meeting between the two schools, with Wagner looking for its first-ever victory against the Owls (0-7-0).
- Last season, Temple blanked the Green & White, 3-0, at Hameline Field.
ALLEN NAMED #NECPRIMEPERFORMER:
- The Northeast Conference (NEC) announced in its weekly release that junior midfielder Le'la Allen was selected to the Week 4 #NECPrimePerformer List.
- The Piscataway, NJ native tallied the game-winner in overtime on Sunday, lifting Wagner past Iona, 3-2.
- For Allen, it marked her second straight Sunday recording a goal, giving her two on the season and six for her career.
NUNEZ ASCENDS UPWARDS ON CAREER LIST:
- Senior forward and tri-captain, Maria Nunez, is rapidly ascending on several all-time career marks here at Wagner.
- With her goal in Sunday's 3-2 overtime triumph over Iona, the East Greenwich, RI native now stands in sole possession of ninth place on the all-time goals scored list with 11. Next up is Briana Vassallo, who recorded 12 goals from 2007-10.
- Additionally, Nunez also ranks ninth on the all-time career points list with 22. She will need six points to tie former Seahawk, Samantha Jensen ('15), who finished with 28 career points.
- Nunez has 81 career shots attempted, good for eighth in program history while her 42 shots on goal are now fourth all-time.
