Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College women's soccer team hosts Delaware State in the home opener on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Hameline Field. 

 
HOME OPENERS:
  • Wagner brings an all-time mark of 7-18-1 in home openers when the Seahawks play Delaware State. 
  • Over the last nine home openers, the Green & White sport a 4-4-1 record at Hameline Field. 
  • The Seahawks last home opener triumph came back on August 24, 2014, when Wagner defeated MAAC foe, Iona, 1-0, at Hameline Field. 
 
ALL-TIME AGAINST DELAWARE STATE:
  • Wagner and Delaware State will matchup for the 14th time in program history, with the Seahawks leading the head-to-head series, 9-3-1. 
  • At Hameline Field, the Green & White have posted a 5-2 record against DSU. 
  • Wagner is looking for its third straight win over the Hornets, after besting Delaware State, 2-1, a season ago. 
  • Rising junior Le'la Allen netted the tying goal in the 68th minute and senior tri-captain Maria Nunez booted home what turned out to be the game-winner in the 71st minute in propelling the Seahawks to victory. 


ABOUT DELAWARE STATE:
  • Delaware State, who competes as an Independent, finished 3-14-2 last season. 
  • Savannah Ay is the Hornets' leading returning scorer, as she netted four goals. 
  • Alexa Gibbs (2 goals, 2 assists, 6 points) and Alyssa Coustenis (1 goal, 2 assists, 4 points) tied for the team lead in assists a season ago. 
  • The Hornets opened the 2019 season on the road at Saint Peter's on Friday evening.
  • The Peacocks scored less than ten minutes into the match, defeating Delaware State, 3-1.
  • The Hornets got on the board in the 69th minute when Savannah Ay beat SPU's goalkeeper to cut the lead to 3-1. The goal for Ay was her fifth career score. 

 
SEAHAWK BREAKDOWN:
  • Wagner was picked ninth in the 2019 Northeast Conference (NEC) preseason coaches' poll, released by the league office on last Tuesday. 
  • The 2019 Seahawks return 20 student-athletes, which includes leading goal scorer, senior Maria Nunez (5 goals), goalkeeper Delaney Beck and All-NEC Rookie Team selection, Luisa Barone
  • Third-year head coach, Phil Casella, announced that seniors Christine Letendre, Nunez, and Kaitlyn Ross will serve as team captains for the 2019 season. 
  • This is the second straight season that this trio has been selected team captains. 
  • Casella welcomes ten newcomers to the mix this season, which includes the addition of graduate transfer, Mariana Jaramillo, who comes to Grymes Hill after completing a four-year career at Iona College.
  • Also new for 2019 is Amelia Sapirman, who will serve as assistant coach this season after completing a stellar four-year collegiate career at NJIT.  
 
UP NEXT:
  • The Seahawks will conclude its three-game homestand this week, as they welcome Fairfield on August 30 at 7:00 p.m. and wrap up the second week of the season against Rhode Island on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 1:00 pm.
