OPENING KICK:
  • The Wagner College women's soccer team begins its 27th season of NCAA Division I play with a two-match opening week, starting Friday evening at Rider and concluding Sunday against Delaware State on Sunday at Hameline Field. 
 

SEAHAWK BREAKDOWN:
  • Wagner was picked ninth in the 2019 Northeast Conference (NEC) preseason coaches' poll, released by the league office on last Tuesday. 
  • The 2019 Seahawks return 20 student-athletes, which includes leading goal scorer, senior Maria Nunez (5 goals), goalkeeper Delaney Beck and All-NEC Rookie Team selection, Luisa Barone
  • Third-year head coach, Phil Casella, announced that seniors Christine Letendre, Nunez, and Kaitlyn Ross will serve as team captains for the 2019 season. 
  • This is the second straight season that this trio has been selected team captains. 
  • Casella welcomes ten newcomers to the mix this season, which includes the addition of graduate transfer, Mariana Jaramillo, who comes to Grymes Hill after completing a four-year career at Iona College.
  • Also new for 2019 is Amelia Sapirman, who will serve as assistant coach this season after completing a stellar four-year collegiate career at NJIT.  


SEASON'S GREETINGS:
  • All-time, Wagner is 4-20-2 in season openers.
  • The Seahawks' last victory on opening day came back on August 23, 2013, when the Green & White traveled to another Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) member, Saint Peter's, and defeated the Peacocks, 3-1, in Jersey City. 


ALL-TIME AGAINST RIDER:
  • The Seahawks and Broncs will be squaring off for the 11th time in program history, with Rider leading the head-to-head matchup, 6-4.
  • All-time, Wagner is 3-2 against the Broncs in Lawrenceville, NJ. 
  • Last season, these two programs met at Hameline Field, with Rider edging Wagner, 2-1, in overtime. 
  • In that contest, Wagner outshot the Broncs, 17-8, holding a commanding 8-2 edge in the first half. 
  • Senior tri-captain, Maria Nunez, scored the Seahawks lone goal in the 41st minute. 
 
ABOUT RIDER:
  • Rider was picked fifth in the MAAC Preseason Coaches Poll after finishing the 2018 campaign at 8-6-4 while going 4-3-3 in MAAC play. 
  • Valeria Pascuet and Niamh Cashin were each named to the Preseason All-Team. 
  • Pascuet is Rider's top returning scorer, netting six goals and a team-best seven assists a season ago. 

 
UP NEXT:
  • Wagner's home opener is set for Sunday, August 25 as the Seahawks will play host to the Delaware State University Hornets.
  • Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m at Hameline Field.
