Wolohan Named Interim Men’s And Women’s Water Polo Coach For 2019-20 Seasons

Staten Island, NY – Former Wagner College All-American and assistant coach, Ciaran Wolohan, has been elevated to the Interim Head Men's and Women's Water Polo coaching position for the 2019 and 2020 seasons, respectively, athletic director Walt Hameline announced on Thursday.

Following his stellar Seahawk playing career, when he competed on the first two men's water polo teams in Wagner history under head coach Chris Radmonovich, the Manly, Australia native served as an assistant under Radmonovich for the 2018 men''s and the 2019 women's team, where he helped lead the Seahawks to their unprecedented sixth straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) title and sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament bid.

Last month, Radmonovich stepped down as the head coach of the Green & White men's and women's programs to pursue a career in private business.

As an assistant for both teams last year, Wolohan played a major role in recruiting, helping to attract multiple experienced international players, several of whom had competed for their respective national teams prior to arriving on Grymes Hill.

Wolohan's one season as an assistant for the women's team was an historic one. In addition to playing a role in the Seahawks' winning their sixth straight MAAC title, Wagner set a program-record 30 victories (30-10 overall, 14-1 MAAC), and achieved a No. 19 ranking in the final Collegiate Water Polo (CWPA) Poll. Wolohan helped develop senior Erica Hardy and freshman Sofia Diaz Alvarez, each of whom were named Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Honorable Mention All-American selections.

"We're excited that Ciaran will continue as interim head coach of both programs this coming year," said Hameline. "We appreciate his abilities and loyalty and look forward to him building on the two program's successes in 2019-2020.

With Wolohan at Radmonovich's side, the 2018 Seahawk men's team claimed its first winning season, finishing with an 18-14 mark, while in the spring, the 2019 women's team roared to its sixth consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) title and sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament bid.

Additionally, Wolohan supported Radmonovich in the creation of training and game plans that were vital for each team's success.

Prior to his appointment as assistant coach, Wolohan was a standout on the Wagner Men's Water Polo team for two years, from its inception. In his second season, he was named 2018 team captain and helped lead the Green and White to the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Championship Game. This achievement marked the first time in NCAA history that a second-year program had ever reached its conference title game.

Wolohan, who spent two years at St. Aloysius College before become a member of Wagner's first-ever men's water polo team in 2016, earned a spot on the 2017 Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Men's Division I All-American Team, and will forever have the distinction of being the Seahawks' first-ever men's water polo All-American.

"Ciaran is one of the young men who took a chance on a first-year program a year ago and I am extremely proud that his play has earned him this distinction," said Radmonovich at the time.

This will not be Wolohan's first experience as a head coach as he headed the U-16 and U-18 Huntington Beach Water Polo Club teams between November 2014 and July 2016. During his time there he organized and managed trainings for both teams and created a team culture that helped eight athletes earn spots on NCAA rosters.

In addition to his coaching duties in 2019-20, Wolohan will be continuing his pursuit of a Master's Degree.
