2019 Hall Of Fame Class Announced; Four Honorees To Be Inducted On October 5

Staten Island, NY – Wagner College Athletic Director Walt Hameline has announced the four inductees who will comprise the 2019 Seahawk Hall of Fame class: Bob Malizia (Class of 1968, Football), Josh Russell (Class of 2004, Track & Field), Carrie Walker (Class of 2004, Women's Basketball), and Dereck Whittenburg (Men's Basketball Coach/Contributor).
 
These former Seahawk greats were selected on the merit of their athletic prowess and overall impact on Wagner Athletics, with induction set to be held on Saturday, October 5 2019, prior to the 6:00 p.m. Homecoming game vs.  Monmouth.
 
The Class of 2019 will be formally inducted at an afternoon ceremony in the VIP Room on the Spiro Sports Center's second floor, before being publicly recognized at halftime of the football game.
 
The Hall of Fame, in 2019, will enjoy its 29th year of nominating, selecting and displaying those Wagner athletes and contributors who have distinguished themselves as extraordinary representatives of the Green & White.
 
With the addition of these four individuals, the number of members in the Wagner Hall of Fame will grow to 186, each representing the best among the thousands of student-athletes and contributors who have dedicated themselves to competition in the name of Wagner College.
 
Bob Malizia – Football (1964-1967)
*Tri-captain and a driving force for the undefeated (9-0) 1967 Team that won the Lambert Bowl, signifying the best small college team in the East
*Member of two undefeated teams as he was a freshman on the (10-0) 1964 squad as well
*Tenacious and aggressive two-way player and three-year starter who starred at both offensive guard and linebacker
*Top performer and leader for the 1967 team which:
 Led Division III in rushing yardage
 Recorded four shutouts, allowing an average of just 4.67 points per game
*Awarded game ball for battling through injury in a 23-7 victory over Springfield College
*Regarded as a coach on the field and an explosive, confident and poised leader
*On defense, earned a reputation as an instinctive and smart linebacker, equally adept at stopping the run and pass
*Native of Wyckoff, NJ and Ramapo Regional High School who received written Hall of Fame endorsements by more than 20 of his former teammates
 
Josh Russell – Track & Field (2000-2004)
*Neptune, NJ native who was a dominant thrower in the shot put throughout his four-year Seahawk career
*An NCAA qualifier in the shot put in 2003 and 2004, winning the event at the NEC Championships and the IC4A Championships
*Named the 2004 Northeast Conference Indoor Performer of the Year
*Wagner record-holder, to this day, in both the outdoor shot put [18.21m (59'9"]), and indoor shot put [17.76m (58' 2"), both set in 2004
*All-Time NEC record-holder in outdoor shot put
*Two-Time NCAA Championship Participant (2003 & 2004)
*6'1", 270-pounder also competed on the Seahawk football team in 2001, and again in 2004, while he concentrated in his shot put career in-between.
*On the 2004 squad, he was a starter on the defensive line where he was credited with 26 tackles, including 17 solo stops.
 
 Carrie Walker– Women's Basketball (2000-2004)
*A 6-0 forward Gibsonia, PA native who ranks 13th in Wagner history in career scoring with 1,288 points
*Possesses 10th-highest scoring average (13.6 ppg) all-time
*Remains among the top-10 all-time at Wagner in rebounds (813), free throws made (354) and free throws attempted (458)
*As a senior in 2003-04, led the team with 17.5 points per game and 10.7 rebounds per game en route to earning All-Met Writers honors
*Named to the 2004 Third-Team Verizon Academic All-America Team, announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)
*2004 NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award winner 
*Two-time All-NEC selection (First Team in 2003, Second Team inn 2004)
*Named the 2001 NEC Rookie of the Year, as well as to the NEC All-Rookie Team, after averaging 12.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per game
*Led Wagner to a 15-13 overall record a 10-8 NEC mark as a junior in 2002-03 on way to earning 1st-Team All-NEC honors
*In her four-year career, led the Seahawks to an NEC record of 39-33, highlighted by an 11-7 record in 2001-02
 
Dereck Whittenburg– Head Men's Basketball Coach (1999-2003)
*In 2002-03, was head coach of the lone Wagner men's basketball team to win the NEC Championship and accompanying NCAA Tournament bid
*Named 2002-03 NEC Coach of the Year
*Has the distinction of being the first men's basketball coach in Wagner's Division I era with a career winning percentage of over .500 (67-50-overall; 46-30 NEC)
*First Wagner men's basketball coach in D-I era to achieve two post-season tournament bids. (2002 NIT and 2003 NCAA)
*Coached seven players who went on to play professionally overseas (Jermaine Hall, Dedrick Dye, Nigel Wyatte, Doug Viegas, Courtney Pritchard, Sean Munson, and DeEarnest McLemore.)

*His teams led the NEC in:
Scoring in three of his four seasons at Wagner
