STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Andy Goveia has been named the head coach of the Wagner men's and women's tennis programs, Wagner College athletics announced on Wednesday. Goveia arrives on Grymes Hill after spending the 2025-26 season as the head coach of both tennis teams at NEC member LIU.
Most recently, Goveia served as the head men's and women's tennis coach at LIU, where he guided the women's team to the No. 3 seed in the NEC Tournament and the men's team to the No. 4 seed. Prior to his promotion to head coach, Goveia spent a season as an assistant coach, helping lead the LIU men to the NEC Championship match and the women to the NEC semifinal round. The men's 2025 postseason run included a semifinal victory over the Seahawks.
In addition to collegiate coaching experience, Goveia spent three years at the Cunningham Tennis Center in Queens, N.Y., where he mentored several youth players who went on to earn top-150 junior rankings and compete in junior Grand Slam events. Goveia served as the primary coach for the tournament training program at the Christopher Morley Tennis Center.
A native of Guyana, Goveia captured the 2007 Guyana National Junior Singles Championship and the National Senior Doubles Championship. Goveia represented Guyana on its national team from 2007-11.
Goveia inherits a men's tennis program coming off the most successful season in school history after capturing its first NEC Championship. The Seahawks return the NEC Player of the Year, junior Eddie Schmidt, and the NEC Rookie of the Year, redshirt-sophomore Lukas Escher.
The women's team enters the 2026-27 season following back-to-back NEC semifinal appearances. Wagner returns junior Victoria Madail, who earned All-NEC First Team honors in 2026.
The Wagner men's and women's tennis teams will announce their schedules at a later date.
