Emmitsburg, MD – It will be an early Northeast Conference (NEC) showdown on Saturday at noon when the Wagner women's lacrosse team, winners of a program-record eight straight games, travels to Mount St. Mary's to face a Mountaineer squad that comes in riding a seven-game winning streak.
The Seahawks enter Saturday's play sporting a 9-2 overall record and a perfect 2-0 NEC mark, while the Mount is 10-2 on the season, and are also 2-0 in league play. The winner of this contest could go a long ways in determining seeding for the four-team 2019 NEC Championship, to be held on May 2 & May 4 at the home site of the No.1-seeded team.
The Green & White and the Mount will be meeting for the 19
th time in a series that began in 2001 and the head-to-head series is tied at 9-9. In the most recent matchup between the teams, the Seahawks came away with a 12-11 road victory. Wagner was led that day by then-senior, and since graduated, attack
Heidi Colford, who poured in eight points (6g, 2a) as part of her Second-Team All-NEC season.
In the latest NCAA statistical rankings, Wagner, led by senior goalie
Kelsey Fee, is rated sixth nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 7.91 goals per game.
The Seahawks are led by NEC Co-Player of the Week and sophomore midfielder
Erin Kerstetter, who filled up several statistical columns in leading Wagner to a 2-0 week in victories over Robert Morris (17-7) and Saint Francis U (17-5).
In Wagner's 17-7 win over Robert Morris on Friday, the dynamic 5'2" South Jersey sparkplug darted her way to a staggering school-record 14 draw controls, while adding two goals, three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Two days later, in the Seahawks' 17-5 Sunday win over Saint Francis U, the speedy Shamong, NJ native corralled nine draw controls, giving her an astounding 23 draw controls in the two games combined.
Additionally, against the Red Flash, Kerstetter, who's been a key performer throughout the Seahawks' current school-record eight-game winning streak, added three goals, including perfect 2-of-2 accuracy on free positon shots, one assist, four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
In just 11 games played, Kerstetter has already zoomed up to the No. 2 spot on the Seahawk all-time single-season draw control list with 72, just 11 behind
Erika Bulken, who amassed 83 draw controls back in 2012.
