Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College men's basketball team will finish the 2019 calendar year as well as this season's non-conference slate with a home contest against Fairfield on Saturday at 4 pm at the Spiro Sports Center. Both teams enter the contest with identical 3-7 records, with Wagner coming off an exciting 82-62 win over Army last Saturday.
Last Time Out
The Seahawks outscored Army West Point 47-30 in the second half to earn a convincing 82-62 victory last Saturday afternoon at the Spiro Sports Center. The pivotal moment of the game came midway through the second half, as back-to-back threes by sophomore
Tyrone Nesby IV and graduate student
Curtis Cobb III along with a big rejection on the defensive end by junior
Nigel Jackson capped an 11-0 Wagner run to give the Seahawks a 53-45 lead.
Home Cooking
With last week's win over Army, the Seahawks moved to 2-1 at home on the season. The Spiro Sports Center has been a big advantage for the Green and White in recent years, highlighted by a 16-1 home record during the 2017-2018 season. Over the course of the last three seasons, Wagner is now 25-9 at home, a .736 win percentage.
Morales Leads The Way
Junior
Alex Morales was named a Northeast Conference (NEC) Prime Performer for the second straight week after his performance against the Black Knights. Morales again paced the Green and White with 21 points to lead all scorers while also contributing eight rebounds and eight assists in the victory. The lone Seahawk to start every game this season, Morales averages 14.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, and five assists on the year.
Three's A Charm
The Seahawks have shown some offensive balance, having at least three players score in double digits in every game this season. The Green and White had four double-digit scorers twice this year, in the season-opener at Seton Hall, as well as the overtime loss to Stony Brook.
Scouting The Stags
Fairfield enters the weekend with a 3-7 record, most recently earning a 61-59 overtime victory over Oakland. The Stags' other two victories on the season came against Texas A&M of the SEC and Holy Cross.
Saturday's meeting marks the ninth all-time meeting between the two teams, with Fairfield holding a 5-3 edge in the head-to-head series. The Seahawks have won two straight contests against the Stags. Last season, Senior
Elijah Davis scored 17 points off the bench to lead four players in double figures and redshirt seniors Romone Saunder and
AJ Sumbry each came through with double-doubles in leading Wagner to a gritty 79-73 win. Two seasons ago, the Seahawks earned a tight 78-76 win over the Stags on Grymes Hill.
Alumni Day Set For January 18
The Seahawks' annual Basketball Alumni Day event will take place on Saturday, January 18, 2020, when Wagner hosts St. Francis Brooklyn for a doubleheader at the Spiro Sports Center.
Non-Conference Play Winding Down
Saturday's contest marks the second to last non-conference game for the Seahawks, who will kick off Northeast Conference action on January 2 at Mount St. Mary's. With the addition of Merrimack to the NEC, this year's regular season conference slate will feature 18 games in a two-month stretch, with the NEC tournament scheduled for March 4-10.
