Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College field hockey team returns home on Friday evening as Northeast Conference (NEC) play commences with the Green & White hosting the Rider University Broncs. Following one of their best defensive performances since the season opener against Hofstra on Sunday at No. 20 Albany, Wagner will be looking to find their offensive rhythm against a Rider squad that has conceded at least one goal in every game this season.
LAST TIME OUT FOR WAGNER:
Last Sunday, the Seahawks fell to the No. 20 Albany Great Danes, 4-0. The Green & White were led by graduate goalkeeper
Annabel Zandvoort, who played a full 60 minutes for the first time this season. In the match Zandvoort acted as the backbone to a strong Seahawk defense, recording career highs in saves (14) and save percentage (78%). Offensively, the Green & White were once again led by
Hannah Meyer, who led the team in shots with one, however, the Seahawks failed to garner a single shot on target during the game.
ABOUT RIDER:
The Broncs are in the midst of a four-game winning streak, which includes their most recent victory, a 4-3 overtime win over Villanova. Rider is led by an offensive tandem of sophomores Carly Brosious and Julia DiVorra. Both have scored eight goals apiece which leads the squad. Their respective goal marks are also good for an eighth-place tie in the nation's rankings for goals per game at 1.00 per game. The Broncs are led defensively by junior goalkeeper Lena Vandam who comes into this game boasting the fourth-highest save percentage in the nation, stopping 82% of the shots that come her way. When scouting the Broncs it is easy to see they are both fast starters and strong finishers, with 17 of their 23 goals coming in either the first or fourth quarter and overtime. The key for Wagner in this game will be to start the game focused and to stay alert to the final whistle, because that is when Rider makes their most assertive pushes.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR THE SEAHAWKS:
The Seahawks continue NEC play with a two-game road trip next weekend taking on the LIU Sharks on Friday, October 11 at 4:00 p.m. before traveling to Bryant on Sunday, October 13 for a 12:00 pm start. Both games will be available to stream on NEC Front Row.
